History of the Department
           Physics Major was started in our College during the year 1985- ’86. The department has grown into a fully fledged Research Centre from 2011 with all of the six faculty members being recognized as approved guides under Manonmaniam Sundaranar University, Tirunelveli. Research is meticulously carried out in the Department by undertaking Major and Minor Research Projects funded by UGC, BRNS, DST etc. The research work of the faculty and students are presented in National/ International Seminars and Conferences. The research works undertaken in the Department are published in reputed National and International Journals. The faculty members excel in a broad area of expertise and interests. The infrastructure and the equipments in the laboratory help to boost up the theoretical knowledge of the students with experimental analysis. Along with their regular curriculum, a certificate course in Optical Communication by BSNL, Nagercoil and UGC career orientedAdd-on courses in Maintenance of Electrical Equipments are provided to students. The department has a creditable record in university examinations with the students excelling by securing university ranks. The Alumni decorate goodpositions in teaching and research institutions.

Highlights
  • The Department plays a pivotal role in promotion of researchby undertaking Major and Minor Projects. The staff and students actively present their research works in Conferences and Seminars and also publishin reputed National And International Journals.
  • UGC career oriented Add- On Certificate and Diploma courses in Maintenance of Electrical and Electronic Equipments are offered to the students.
  • The Department has MoUs with BSNL-Nagercoil, Kerala State Science and Technology (KSSTM) – Trivandrum and with Department of Humanities and Science, St Xavier’s Catholic College, Chunkankadai.
  • National Seminars on Physics (NSP) are conducted annually with paper presentation sessions. The proceedings being published in ISBN book/ ISSN/U.G.C. care list journal.
  • Intercollegiate competitions in Physics WIPCO are conducted every year to celebrate National Science Day on February 28th.
  • “AGNI”, the department magazine encompassing the activities of the Department and student achievements is released annually.
  • Every year, students are encouraged to write the NGP Examination conducted by IAPT.
  • Physics Association conducts meetings and competitions to instil scientific knowledge and to inculcate the skills of students.
  • Physica-Fest, a paper presentation competition is conducted to shape the oratory and presentation skills of students.
  • Based on the MOU with BSNL, the students undertake a certificate course in optical communication.
  • Students are taken regularly on field trips to scientifically acclaimed places like Kudankulam Nuclear Power plant, ISRO- Mahendragiri, Nehru Planetorium & Science Exhibition- Trivandrum, Science Centre- Tirunelveli etc.
  • The students are encouraged to develop their soft skills with the help of trainers from Vantage Academy.
  • The students secure ranks regularly in the University Examinations.

Head of the Department Dr. V. Bena Jothy M.Sc., PGDCA, M. Phil., Ph. D Dr.V. Bena Jothy is serving in the Department of Physics since 1991. She has cleared the State Level Screening Test conducted by the University of Madras in 1990. She serves as a research guide in Manonmaniam Sundaranar University. She has published 68 papers in International peer reviewed journals and reviewed 21 articles in Scopus indexed journals. She has presented papers in 143 National and 72 International Conferences. She has delivered invited talks in 4 International Conferences and served as Chair Person in many Conferences. She has guided 10 M.Phil Scholars and 11 Scholars have completed research under her guidance. At present, 4 scholars are pursuing research under her guidance. She has received Best Paper Award in the 98th Indian Science Congress Association Conference and also the recipient of Academic Achievers award from Kanniyakumari Academy of Arts and Science. She is the life member of some scientific associations. She is serving as a member of the U.G Physics Board of Manonmaniam Sundaranar University.
Assistant Professor Dr. S. Grace Victoria, M.Sc., M.Phil. Ph.D. Dr. S. Grace Victoria is working as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Physics since 2017 after acquiring a working experience of 7 years in the P.G. Department of Physics (S.F). Her area of expertise is Materials Science specialising in Thin Film Gas Sensors. She has 3 publications in InternationalJournals. She has guided eight M.Phil. scholars. She is an approved guide under M.S. University and four research scholars are pursuing research under her. She is the Coordinator of the Add-on course in Physics offered by M.S. University.

  2. V. Samraj Memorial Prize is awarded to the best student in I year Physics.

  4. Sundara Bai Thankaraj Memorial Prize is awarded to the best student in II year Physics.
Departmental Activities of the academic year 2020-2021
  • A National Webinar on “Applications of Vibrational Spectroscopy” in association with Indian Spectroscopy Society was conducted on 28-07-2020. Dr. K. R. Aranganayagam, Dept. of Chemistry, Kumaraguru College of Technology, Coimbatore and Dr. I. Hubert Joe, Dept. of Physics, University of Kerala were the resource persons.
  • On 04-08-2020, an International Webinar on “Physico-chemists Care for Your Health” with Prof. Dr. Sylvia Turrell, Universite des Sciences et Technologies de Lille 1 – France was organized via. Zoom platform that attracted the attention of enthusiastic participants from the student fraternity and teaching community all across the globe.
  • The Physics Association was inaugurated by Er. Rose Cyril Xavier, Assistant G. M., BSNL, Nagercoil on 19-10-2020.
  • Throughout the pandemic period, the research guides of our Department have been in regular contact with their Ph.D. wards via. video conferencing. The lock down situation did not deter three research scholars of our department completing their Ph.D Viva Voce.
  • A Special Online Lecture on ‘Introduction to Ensembles’ by Prof. Senthilvelan, Head, Dept. of Nonlinear Dynamics, Bharathidasan University, Trichy was held on 25-08-2020.
  • A National Level E- Quiz competition in Physics attracted a huge response from the students. The toppers were selected and awarded with cash prizes.
  • Regular Counselling Programmes were offered to the students to motivate and inspire them during the period of isolation in their homes.

  • The Inauguration of the Physics Association on 13th August marked the first of the many department activities for the academic year 2019-’20. Dr.S.   • Paper presentation competition ‘Physica Fest’ was held on 24-1-2020.
  • The Intercollegiate competitions WIPCO-2020 held on 28-02-2020 to celebrate National Science Day saw an overwhelming response of more than 100 participants from various colleges.
  • The yearly seminar series NSP – 20 was organised with resource persons from IGCAR, Kalpakkam. The papers presented in the Seminar were published in an UGC Care Journal with ISSN number.
  • 56 students attended the IAPT – NGPE exams this year and K. Dhivyadharshini of II B. Sc. Physics emerged as a State level topper.
  • Dr. M.M. Latha attended and presented a paper in the Conference on Nonlinear Systems and Dynamics organized by the Department of Physics, Indian Institute of Technology, Kanpur.
  • Dr. D. Usha received the Indo-Russia friendship award for educational excellence-2019 from the Global Society for health and educational growth, New Delhi.
  • Dr. V. Bena Jothy served as the resource person in the Seminar on Nuclear energy and Spectroscopy in Sree Ayyappa College, Chunkankadai and in the Eighth International Conference on Perspectives in Vibrational Spectroscopy in Jawaharlal Nehru Centre for Advanced Scientific Research, Bangalore.
  • Dr. S. Grace Victoria attended the two days National Workshop on Societal Responsibility- Role of science teachers’ organised by Department of Renewable Energy Resource, M.S. University with MHRD, India.
  • Two Research Scholars completed their Ph.D.
Departmental Activities of the academic year 2018-2019
  • The Inauguration of the Physics Association on 25-07-2018 marked the beginning of a series of vibrant activities.
  • R.G. Praganya, P. Vinsha, R.J. Beni of III B.Sc Physics, K. Diyvadharshini and B. Harishma of I B.Sc Physics emerged as the State level toppers in IAPT- NGPE examinations.
  • Physica Fest that serves as a perfect platform for paper presentations by students was successfully conducted on 23-2-2019.
  • WIPCO, the annual intercollegiate competitions held on 7-3-2019 attracted many participants from the length and breadth of the district.
  • The Department Seminar NSP’19 was held on 13-3-2019 that included a paper presentation session. The proceedings were published in a book with ISBN number.
  • The students visited scientifically acclaimed places like Jawaharlal Nehru Planetorium and Visveswaraya Technological Museum at Bangalore, Dalmia wind farm, Aralvaimozhi, Priyadharshini Planetorium, Thiruvananthapuram and ISRO, Mahendragiri.
  • The Department of Physics signed two new MoUs with Department of Humanities and Science, Xavier’s College, Chunkankadai and the Kerala State Science and Technology (KSSTM), Trivandrum, Kerala.
  • Dr. V. Bena Jothy served as resource person in the International Seminar on Technologically Advanced Materials on 29thseptember 2018 at Muslim Arts College, Thiruvithancode.
  • Dr. M. M. Latha, Head of Physics Department is operating a Major Research Project entitled “Chaotic Dynamics of Heisenberg Ferromagnetic Spin Systems and its Application to Spin-Transfer-Nano-Oscillators” funded by the Department of Science and Technology, Govt. of India for Rs. 18,93,520/-. She is also operating another Major Research Project entitled “Chaotic Behaviour of Cubic Quintic Septic Equation Governing Duffing Oscillator” funded by the ‘National Board for Higher Mathematics’, Department of Atomic Energy, Govt. of India amounting to Rs. 13,56,600/-
Departmental Activities of the academic year 2017-2018
  • The annual activites kickstarted with the inauguration of Physics Association on 09-08-2017 by Mr. P. Pandaram, Scientific Officer, Kudankulam Nuclear Power Plant.
  • Periodic meetings were held with eminent experts in science. Mr. Allwin Jose, Section Head, Vikram Sarabai Space Centre-Trivandrum, Dr. Kalainathan, Director, VIT and Dr. Anoop, Scientist from IGCAR were some of the notable chief guests.
  • A. Asha of II M.Sc. and Evangelin Ashna of III B.Sc. bagged I and III prizes respectively in the paper presentation competition as part of PHYSCOM ’18 at St. Xavier’s College, Palayamkottai.
  • Effective counseling to the students was provided with immense help of Dr. J. Beula, Retired Prof., in Physics and Former Coordinator of Counselling cell of our College.
  • The counseling skills of Prof. Vijayakanta Robin, Former HoD of Botany was also made use of in the counseling programs.
  • The Department celebrated the Joy of giving (2nd -8th October 2017)
Departmental Activities of the academic year 2016-2017
  • The Department flagged off its activities with the Inauguration of the Physics Association on 23-08-2016.
  • National Science Day was celebrated in a gala manner on 28/02/2017.
  • The Department quiz club members had a fruitful year by bagging prestigious awards in various quiz competitions held in the District. They brought Laurels by winning the first prize in various intercollegiate competitions held at St. Xavier College, Nagercoil, Pioneer Kumaraswamy College, Nagercoil and Kamaraj College, Tuticorin.
  • J. Lydia, Gifty John and Fathima Sahana of III B.Sc Physics emerged the Zonal Level winners in the Quiz Competition conducted by IGCAR, Kalpakkam at N.I. College, Kumaracoil.
  • M. Janaki Devi and J. Lydia of III B.Sc had the privilege of participating in the Physics Talent and Training Search (PTTS- 2016) for a fortnight in the month of December at Mysore sponsored by Infosys.
  • The students were taken to the National Science Centre, Trivandrum and also to ISRO, Mahendragiri that enriched visual literacy.
  • Physica Fest- 2017 was held on 11/02/2017 in which Dr. Monickam Mahendran, Associate Professor, Thiyagaraja College, Madurai delivered an interesting and entertaining talk on Kitchen Science.
  • Dr. M.M. Latha and students attended the workshop on “Ancient Indian Science and Engineering Practices” at Thiyagaraja College, Madurai.
  • It was a time for recollection of memories in the Department Alumnae meeting held on 09-01-2017.
  • The annual activities of the Department culminated in the yearly event of NSP- 2017 on the 2nd of March. Eminent Scientists from Kudankulam Nuclear Power Plant and Indian Rare Earth Limited, Manavalakurichi delivered special lectures.
Alumnae
          The Physics Department maintains good ties with the alumni of our department by organizing Annual Alumnae Meetings to celebrate and cherish old relationships and to form new ones. The alumnae used to assemble together with great enthusiasm and joy and are delighted to be back in the alma mater. The office bearers of the Alumnae Associationare Dr. Goma, Assistant Professor of Physics, Lekshmipuram College, Dr. Radhiha, Assistant Professor of Physics, Pioneer Kumaraswamy College and Dr. Jenitta, Assistant Professor of Physics, Mano Constituent College. The Alumnae are accorded a warm welcome and are updated with the developments in the Department. Playful games and puzzles are given to add an air of happy homecoming.The alumnae recall their fond memories in the campus and extend their full cooperation to the development of the Department. The alumnae meetings serve as a perfect platform to rewind their memories and to revive the ties.
