History of the Department

           When the college was established in 1973, the Department of History was also started offering history at the pre-university level under the charismatic leadership of Dr. Mrs. Beula Jeyamathy Wilson. It is laudable to say that she was the first Doctorate Degree holder of this college in 1982, ever since its inception. Later the department was elevated to a full fledged in 1976 with a sanctioned intake of 30 students in the under graduate level. Consequently it was increased to 64. Further during the year 1984 the department was strengthened by the introduction of P.G Course in history with an intake of 30. The Department of History has a library to impart quality education to the students . All the faculty members of the Department of History are Ph.D. holders. Among them Dr. D. Esther, Dr. T.N. Suseela, Dr. Rani Mila and Dr. V. Divya are recognized research guides of the Manonmaniam Sundaranar University.

Highlights

Women’s Christian College which is situated in the heart of the Nagercoil town poises its own tradition of imparting knowledge and service. Started 41 years ago with the mission to promote excellence in the field of education specially for girls, our college is marching towards the Path of Progress. The Department of History was also started in the year 1973 at the pre University level under the steermanship of Dr. Mrs. Beula Jebamathy Wilson. It is laudable to say that she was the Doctorate Degree holder of this college in 1982 ever since its inception. As a token of tribute and to honour her, every year we are conducting National Seminar in memory of Dr. Mrs. Beula Jebamathy Wilson. The Madurai Kamaraj University granted sanction to the college to start B.A. History in 1976 with a intake of 30 students. In 1984 the department was strengthened with an introduction of P.G. Course. The year 1987 was an eventful year for the Department of History. Prof. Dick Kooiman of Netherland Free University inaugurated the History association with his eloquent speech. From its inception onwards our Department has witnessed unprecedented and spectacular Rank holders in the University examination. To add one more feather in its cap our Department Visually impaired students have won golden medal in the University Examination. As our college motto stands as “Enlightened we serve”, our former students too serving in various capacities such as Professors, teachers, entrepreneurs, social actionist, lawyers, and holding various position in the police department. Each year we are providing financial assistance to the deserving poor students for the cause of education. During festival time (Christmas) we extend our helping hand by offering cloths, finance for the needy ones. Being elevated as a research department, nearly 20 research scholars are pursuing their research under the guidance of Dr.D.Esther, Dr.T.N.Suseela, Dr.Rani Mila and Dr. Divya.

She has produced one doctoral degree holder and is guiding another Ph.D. Scholar at present. She is serving as a co-ordinator in the Entrepreneurship Development Cell.

She joined the Dept. of History as Asst. Professor in 2007. She took her doctoral degree in 2013. Her Ph.D topic is “The impact of press on social changes in Tamilnadu 1929-1981”. She served as a NSS programme officer from 2008 to 2011.

She joined as a lecturer in this prestigious institution in 2015. She got the Doctorate degree 2014 and the title of her Research work is History of Higher Education in Kanyakumari District 2014.

Dr. E. Beena Lenil is working as Assistant Professor in the Department of History. She has good academic excellence with university VI Rank in M.A. She has five publications in reputed journals and presented three papers and attended twelve seminars. She got her Doctorate Degree in 2011 and the title of her Research work is “Advent of Christian Missionaries in South Travancore: A Socio-Religious Identity of the oppressed”. She has teaching experience in Lady Doak College, Madurai, Yadava College, Madurai and Scott Christian College, Nagercoil. At present she is serving as the NSS programme Officer and Nodal Officer.

Dr. T.A. Femila is working as a Assistant professor in the Department of History. She has good academic excellence with University 4th Rank in M.A., She has published 3 papers in reputed journal and presented 7 papers and attended 15 seminars. She got her Doctorate Degree in 2016 and the title of her Research work is “History of Tourist centres in Kanyakumari District with special reference to its impact on culture”. She has teaching experience in Mar Chrysostom College of Education, Kirathoor. She has the privilege to work as a Assistant professor in Women’s Christian College in FIP Post from 2009-2011. She has also worked in Scott Christian College, Nagercoil from 2016-2017. At present she has working as a Assistant professor in Women’s Christian College, Nagercoil.

Dr. V.Divya is presently working as an Assistant Professor in the Department of History, Women’s Christian College, Nagercoil. She has good academic excellence with her subject. She got her Doctorate Degree in 2016 and the title of her Research work is “Role of Travancore State Congress in Travancore State Politics 1938-1956”. She has teaching experience in Sri Ramaswamy Naidu Memorial College, Sattur. She has the privilege to work as a Guest Lecturer from 2014-2016 and as Assistant Professor in Scott Christian College, Nagercoil from 2017-2018.

Dr.N.Mary Usha is currently working as an Assistant Professor in the Department of History, Women’s Christian College, Nagercoil. She has good academic excellence in her subject. She has published 7 papers in International journals and presented 14 papers and attended 15 seminars. She got her Doctorate Degree in 2014 and the title of her Research work is “Role of Protestant Missionaries in Enhancing General Education in Tirunelveli District from 19th Century to 1945”. She has teaching experience in Muslim College of Education and Babuji College of Education. She worked as Assistant Professor in Scott Christian College, Nagercoil from 2017-2018.

She joined the department of History, Women’s Christian College, Nagercoil as Assistant Professor in 2020. She has good academic excellence with her subject. She got her Doctorate degree in 2016 and the title of her Research work is “The Land Revenue Administration in Tamil Nadu 1947 – 1967”. She worked as Assistant Professor in Scott Christian College, Nagercoil from 2019 -2020.

  4. Michael Gide Fongian Merit Prize is awarded to the best student of I MA History.
  5. Nalini Kumaraswamy Memorial Prize is awarded to the two meritorious students,one from III BA Historyand the other from II MA History.
  6. Mrs. Beulah Jeyamathy Wilson Memorial Fund is awarded to II MA History student who secures the highest mark in all the three semesters.
  7. Samuel Victor Satish Endowment Scholarship is awarded to one poor student preferably doing History major first year to third year.
  8. Dr. Geetha Seleena Robinson Endowment Scholarship is awarded to the best outgoing student in PG History.
Departmental Activities of the academic year 2020-2021
  • We conducted e-quiz on
    1. Covid 19 on Historical Perspective from 01/06/2020 to 05/06/2020. There were 383 responses.
    2. Ancient Indian History from 15/06/2020 to 19/06/2020. There were 126 responses.
    3. Outstanding Women Achieves of all times from 29/06/2020 to 03/07/2020. There were 193 responses.
  • We celebrated the Independence Day by conducting quiz and elocution competition on My Future India.
  • We conducted an Elocution competition on Role of youth for the upliftment of the society and essay competition on APJ Abdul Kalam a great visionary. Both the above activities are proposed by the Youth Welfare and Sports Development Department, Tamil Nadu for the celebration of youth awakening Day on 15th October 2020 in remembrance of Bharat Ratna Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam.
  • We contributed worth of Rs. 2800 (2 Sarees, 2 Chudidhar, 2 Pants, 1 shirts) and Rs. 300 Snacks for the AIDS patients through Positive Response Club on 18.02.2021.
  • Fresher’s Day was celebrated both by UG and PG for the Juniors, Seniors conducted quiz programme in a novel way to cheer the juniors.
  • An awareness programme on “Health and Hygiene was conducted. Dr. M. Santhi, Director Retna Memorial Hospital, Swamiyar Madam, Kattathurai was the Chief Speaker. In her address she emphasized on how to have a healthy physique and how the young generation has to adopt good hygiene ways for a happy, healthy life.
Departmental Activities of the academic year 2019-2020
  • Kanyakumari which pops out in the edge as the southernmost tip of the India’s main land is our route on 14.08.2019 to have a glance at the historical sites, such as Chitharal cave temple, Mathoor Aqueduct, the beautiful Padmanabhapuram Palace (The wooden place) and Kanyakumari. – Though it is in the State of Tamil Nadu, it is maintenaned by the Government Kerala. Udayagiri, which may be a paradise for the birdwatchers. It is converted into a mini zoo and houses the memorial of commander De Lannoy of the Dutch East India Company.
  • On 13.09.2019 the Department of History inaugurated its association for the activities of the year 2019-2020, by honoring an Alumnae. Mrs. Krishna Rekha former student and a recipient of International Awards in 2019 in the field of sports, and who is currently the PC of Manavalakurichi station was the guest of honour.
  • A noteworthy event which is of much significance in the pages of history Department is the Awareness programme on Environment which was held on 03.10.2019. Mr. Joe Prakash, the district Co-ordinator for National Green corps and Dr. Edwin Gladson, Coordinator for National Green Corps (Nagercoil Edu. District) were the resource persons for the day. The Programme commenced with a planting of teak saplings in the college campus. All the department students were provided with Teak saplings.
  • To celebrate “Joy of Giving” we declared 04.10.2019 as the Sales day. Students enthusiastically and voluntarily contributed their might and raised an amount of the Rs. 7,101/-. It’s a noble gesture on the part of the students, and we generously contributed Rs. 7101/- to the Orphan Children studying in Home Church Higher Secondary School on 19th December 2019, by way of dresses and sweets.
Departmental Activities of the academic year 2018-2019
  • College life was started with a fun fulfilled freshers day on 12.07.2018.
  • The inauguration of History association was held on 14.08.2018. Dr. T. Rajendran, Principal Sun College of Education was the Chief guest, who in his talk emphasized the importance of History and inspired the students.
  • The Department of History and the Department of Tamil Jointly organized a seminar on “The History of Ancient Tamils” on 30.08.2018. Rev. Dr. Nehemiah Thompson, Executive Director of Christ Way International New Jersey, was the Chief Guest who clearly envisaged the significance of the Tamils and their language.
  • A culinary art competition which has been jointly organized by the Eco Club and the Department of Horticulture of Tamil Nadu on 21.07.2018. Mariam Amala of III B.A History bagged the first prize, and eight students received the Prizes and Certificates.
  • Through United Social Welfare organization, Nagercoil staff and students of the Department of History donated Rs. 2,070 for a 6 year old boy to undergo an operation at RCC Trivandrum.
  • Jaspine Rani of III B.A. History donated blood and received the certificate of appreciation from the Tamil Nadu State Aids Control Society and Tamil Nadu State Blood Transfusion Council.
  • UN Volunteers India conducted the District youth Parliament under the GOI-UNDP-UNV project on strengthening – NYKS and NSS at Scott Christian College, Nagercoil on September 4th and 5th. Two of our students J. Annibert Jijima and J. Fizala Jahangir participated and received the certificates.
  • An Inter Collegiate Competition ‘Histo Fest was held in St. Mary’s College, Tutucorin, on 1st October 2018. Our students have bagged the “Over all rolling Trophy”.
  • In connection with the Voters Day a Competition was held on 24.01.2019 for Essay writing and Poster Making Anni Winselet of I M.A. History got the Prize for both the Competition.
  • A training programme on preserving the artefacts was jointly organized by the Department of History and the Government Museum, Kanyakumari which was held on 07.02.2019. Eight staff members and 46 students attended the programme, which is of immense value to the students of our Department.
  • An interdepartment competition- Quiz, Power Point Presentation and essay writing were conducted from 21.03.2019 to 25.03.2019. Students from different discipline enthusiastically participated and won prizes.
  • A Photo gallery exhibition was held at Kanyakumari museum on 07.03.2019. Dr. Geetha Seleena Robinson, the Head of the Department of History proposed the toast on the theme “Kanyakumari Mavatta Varalaru”. The Curator of the Museum presided over the function.
Departmental Activities of the academic year 2017-2018
  • “If four things are followed – having a great aim, acquiring knowledge, hard work, and perseverance then anything can be achieved”, was the famous quotes of our former President of India, Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam. This was the premise of the keynote message from Chief Guest, Dr. G. Virgin Sigamani (M.A., M.Ed., M.Phil. Ph.D) former professor and principal of University College, Madurai Kamaraj University during the inauguration of the History Association of August 3, 2017.
  • We observed from August 28th 2017 to September 1st 2017 as History Week and Inter department competitions were held to commemorate the significance of the event. Numerous competitions were conducted and we had an overwhelming response of 128 participants.
  • September 5, 2017 to September 12, 2017 was observed as Parents Meet.
  • An Alumnae meet was held by our department on March 21, 2018, evening.
  • Our staff and students Dr. Geetha Seleena Robinson, J.R. Sutha, Dr. Suseela, Dr. Beena visited Kanyakumari Government Museum on October 10, 2017 and attended the program on “Preservation of rare movements which was arranged for our students with hands on training.
  • “Joy of Giving” week announced by the Government of Tamil Nadu was celebrated where our H.O.D. took the initiative and the students contributed money generously and we bought footballs, cricket balls, Badminton rackets and balls and caron boards and donated them to the students of Government Middle School Thiruppapuram on October 14, 2017.
  • To enhance our study experience, we went on a study tour from February 28, 2018 – March 2, 2018 to Coorg, Mysore and Bangalore. 25 students and 2 staff, Dr. T.R. Sutha and Dr. Rejila of our department took part and visited places such as – Mysore Palace, Philomena Church, Zoo, Brindhavan Gardan, Buddha Viharas – Coorg, boating, bamboo forest, Chamundeeswari Temple, ISKCON temple, Bangalore Museum.
  • The Postal Department of India in order to propagate the importance of handwriting and letter writing conducted a letter writing competition with the aim of enhancing student’s writing skills, under the title “Babuji you inspired” in Tami and English Ten students of our department took part in the event.
  • An inter departmental quiz competition was held on August 17, 2017 sponsored by Malabar Gold Jewellery. J.S. Ahila Shree –II M.A. History and K. Annie Winsler- III B.A. took over the first prize and won laurels for the departmen
  • R. Arulvinitha of II M.A. History, M.J. Mariamamala and Jasmin Rani of II B.A. History voluntarily donated blood and received certificates of appreciation for their splendid social service of higher order from Tamil Nadu State Blood Transfusion Council, Asaripallam.
  • Students of I. M.A. History Safina, Ajithra, Seetham Sindhya and Dr. Femila attended a seminar held at Lakshmipuram College, of Arts and Science on March 2, 2018. The topic was “Heritage of Kanyakumari Distroct and Tourism promotion”
  • Five students from I. M.A. History and Dr. Suji Prabha and Dr. Femila attended the two day seminar held at Nesamoney Memorial Christian College, on March 15, 2018 and March 16, 2018. The topic was “Transformation of Higher Education during the period of MGR”.
  • A national seminar was organized by our department on March 21, 2019. Honorary chief guest was Mr. R.S. Balasubramani, President of integrated Ocean Culture Research Fundation, Chennai who is a marine and maritime archaeology researcher and has worked extensively on the study of ancient Indian maritime activities, sunken lands and the turtle corridor was invited and a speech on Ancient Global. Heritage of Sea farming Tamils was delivered.More than 300 (including staff and students) of various colleges participated and got benefitted.
  • V.C. Akalys of I M.A. History won five prizes in the Intercollegiate Swimming competition held at Tirunelveli Anna Stadium on September 5, 2017.
  • Our department got the overall champion in the college sports day meet.
  • M. Jeya Benisha Susan of I. B.A. History won Youth Athletic Championship in the State level for 100 meters and 200 meters Running.
Departmental Activities of the academic year 2016-2017
  • Our Principal Dr. Nirmala Manuel presided over the association meeting and emphasized the importance of self – motivation. The Chief guest Advocate Mr. Ashok Padma Raj coined the theme three B’s. To Think Bigger, Do Better and Be Bold to do great things.
  • An educational tour to Cochin, a major port city, south west of India provided the opportunity to travel by four means of transport namely bus, train, plane and boat.
  • We are so proud of our four students who won in an inter collegiate volleyball competition held in our college.
  • To provide students with an opportunity to learn about the wide variety of disciplines we encourage our students to participate in various competitions conducted by various institutions.
  • A two day workshop on Ancient Tamil Script was held in the month of February and Mr. Chentee Natarajan, an epigraphist trained the students to read and write Vatteluttu, Grantha and Brahmi Script. Mr. Shahul Hameed, social activist gave a clear picture about the various scripts found in the inscriptions in Kanyakumari District..
  • A one day seminar cum exhibition on the Archaeological Sources of Kanyakumari District was conducted in collaboration with the Government Museum Kanyakumari. Mr. S. Sathiyavalli M.A. District Curator, Government Museum Kanyakumari District gave a clear piucture about the excavation techniques, the archaeological sites of Tamil Nadu and also about the inscriptions available in Kanyakumari District
  • Dr. Siva of Aringnar Anna College Vividly portrayed the epigraphical scripts and ancient names of various places in Kanyakumari. We gained a wealth of knowledge and a sense of renewed hope and inspiration filled us after the seminar. Our principal opened the archaeological exhibition.
Alumnae

          Every year we organized the alumnae meet in our department. The alumnae gathered with great zeal and they shared their experiences about the alma mater and thankful they are to this institution.
