History of the Department
The department of Economics was started in the year 1986. It has five fully qualified faculty. Excellent coaching is given to the students. Students secure university ranks and are placed in high positions. Spoken English, Add on courses, certificate courses and computer education are given to students to enrich their knowledge. Poor students are helped by the department.

Highlights
The department offers courses on Economic statistics, Mathematical Methods and Banking which help the students for their higher studies and opt for better job facilities. Students can also pursue MBA, CA, ICWA, IAS, and also Competitive Examinations after they finish U.G Course.The department offers additional course called CAT Course Certificate in Accounting Technicians which will provide the employment opportunity.

Departmental Activities of the academic year 2020-2021
- Department of Economics conducted E-Quiz on the topic Macro Economics from 15.06.2020 to 19.06.2020.It was organized by Mrs.O.C. Geetha, HOD, department of Economics.
- Dr. N. Jayanthi organized an E- Quiz on the topic Indian Economy from 24.07.2020 to 27.07.2020.
- Our department conducted a essay writing competition on 20.12.2020 on the topic “Impact of Covid-19 in Indian Economy”.
- General Knowledge test was conducted on Economics on 20.01.2021.
- The Alumnae Annual get together of our department was held on 22.03.2021 at 2:30 pm.
Departmental Activities of the academic year 2019-2020
- The inaugural meeting of the Economics association was held on 20-08-2019. Dr. Baby, Asst Professor, Sri Devi Kumari College, Kuzhithurai was the guest of the day. She gave a motivational talk on “You can also win”. It was very interesting and useful to the students. Ms. Jenisha of III B. A. was elected as the Vice President of the Association, Ms. Vigneshwari of III B.A as Secretary, Ms. Sreekutty Vice Secretary of II B.A. and Udaya Marish of II B.A. as treasurer of the association.
- Two students of our department Ms. Sreekutty from IIB.A. Economics and Ms. Mubaraka Jahangeer of II B.A. participated in quiz competition conducted by the Nesamony Memorial Christian College, Marthandam on 27.08.2019. They bagged the II place. Department of Economics and Tamil conducted a counseling programme. Fr. Sam, Correspondent St. John’s College, Ammandivilai.
- The joy of giving was decided to be celebrated on 25.10 2019. Two staff and eight students went to George Muller Children’s Home, Paraikankal, Nagercoil.
- Guest lecture on Femininity was conducted on 12.12.2019. The Guest speakers were Dr. J. Michael Xavier and Dr. Thenmozhi, Senior Medical officers, Manitham Homeo Healing Centre, Tiruchy. They gave a talk on Femininity in Economics. It was a motivation to the students.
- Alumni meeting was held on 28.02.2020 at 3.pm.
Departmental Activities of the academic year 2018-2019
- The inaugural meeting of the Economics association was held on 24-07-2018. Mr. N Festus Wilson, Station Superintendent, Southern Railway was the Chief Guest and gave a talk on different type of competitive examination. We elected Ms. Shelcia as secretary of Economics association.
- Our department conducted an interdepartmental poster competition on 11-09-2018. Five important topics were given to the students. The topics are Environmental Issue, Women Harasment, Kerala Flood, GST and Demonetization.
- A one day workshop on Entrepreneurship was held on 12-10-18. Mrs. Anoma Keisy demonstrated different types of juices in the morning session. Mrs. Nirmala demonstrated surf, lotion, sabeena powder etc, in the afternoon session.
- M.P. Abinaya, S. Bavithra, B. Shelcia, M. Sumaiya from IIIB.A.Economics participated in quiz competition conducted in the Nesamony Memorial Christian College, Marthandam on 18.10.2018.
- Dr. N. JAYANTHY, Asst. Prof. of Economics attended a two days faculty development programme conducted by ICT Academy on 27th August and 28th August at Women’s Christian College, Nagercoil. She also attended the UGC sponsored orientation programme conducted by Madurai Kamaraj University, held from 16-11-2018 to 13-12-2018.
- The Alumnae Annual get together of our department was held on 06-02-2019 at 03:30 pm.
- The Economics department conducted an elocution competition on 07-02-2019. The topic for the competition is ”Budget”. Seven students of our department participated in the competition out of them three won prizes. Miss. J. Sahaya Anbarasi (III B. A. Economics ) got the 1st prize, Miss. K. S. Sree Kutty (I B. A. Economics) got the 2nd prize and Miss. B. Shelcia (III B. A. Economics ) got the 3rd prize.
- Our department conducted a National Seminar on “The Impact on Solid Waste Management”. The resource person for the morning session was Dr. Sherly Assistant Professor & H. O. D. of Economics Department , Christian College, Kattakada, Trivandrum. She gave a talk on “The Impact on Solid Waste Management”. In the afternoon session Dr. Salikumar, Assistant Professor & H. O. D. of Economics Department, S. T. Hindu college, Nagercoil gave a talk on “Public Health in India ”.
- Miss. M. P. Abinaya, III B. A. Economics participated and presented a paper on “Digital India and its Impact” and Miss. J. Sahaya Anbarasi , III B. A. Economics participated and presented a paper on “The Budget” in the National Seminar conducted by the Research Forum, Women’s Christian College, Nagercoil on 18-02-2019.
- Miss. B. Shelcia , III B. A. Economics participated in the inter collegiate Ball Badminton match conducted by M. S. University from 10-09-2018 to 11-09-2018 and won 4th place. She participated in C. M. Trophy Ball Badminton match conducted in the Government Arts and Science College, Konam. She also participated in the inter departmental sports competition conducted by Women’s Christian College, Nagercoil and got prizes.
- Know your Economy test was conducted by SRAEF (Scientific Research Association For Economics and Finance ) in Feb 2019. 35 students participated. Our student B.Shelcia of IIIB.A. Economics was awarded as College Toper and cash prize Rs.500 was given.
Departmental Activities of the academic year 2017-2018
- The activities of the Department of Economics started with the Inauguration of the Economics Association on 17.08.2017. Dr. J. Sacratees, HOD , Department of Economics, Manonmaniam Sundaranar Univesity, Tirunelveli, was the guest speaker. Miss.V. Sujitha of III B.A. Economics was elected as the Economics Association Secretary.
- An intercollegiate model competition was conducted by our department on 20.09.2017.
- Mrs. O.C. Geetha served as a resource person in Economics Association of Nesamony Memorial Christian College, Marthamdam on 20.09.2017.
- Two aspiring students of III Economics attended IAS training classes from 19.10.2017 to 21.10.2017 conducted by AIACHE at Chennai.
- An International Conference was conducted by the Department of Economics and Commerce on 05.01.2018 on the topic” Innovative and emerging strategies in Economics and Commerce. The resource persons were Er. Moshe .J. Aron, Senior IT Enterprise Architect, CIBC, Canada and Dr. S. Iyyampillai, Professor, Department of Economics Chair, School of Economics and Commerce &Financial Studies, Bharathidasan Universiy, Thiruchirapali. 20 papers were presented by the teachers and scholars of various institutions. It was published in the “Roots” International Journal of Multi- disciplinary Researchers.
- Dr. M. Janet vasantha Kumari attended a refresher course from 02.02.2018 to 27.02.2018 conducted by Kerela University, Kariyavattom.
- The department of Economics organised a workshop on “BIG IDEA” on 08.02.2018. The Resource persons were Mr. Durai Jaikar, Assistant professor, CARE School of Management , Trichy and Mr. Stracey George, Assistant Professor ,CARE School of Management , Trichy. They gave a talk on “How to develop new business ideas and seek a career as entrepreneurs”. They conducted a practical section also to develop a new business idea.
- Nine of our smart students along with our staff Dr. N. Saravana Amutha Kumari attended a National seminar on 19.03.2018 conducted by Holy Cross College, Nagercoil.
- Ms. R. Haritha of III Economics won Third prize in Elocution conducted by Consumer Club on 02.03.2018.
- The department Alumnae Meeting was held on 12.03.2018 at 4 p.m.
- The Valedictory function of the Economics Association was held on 24-4-2018, Dr.Moni, Associate professor, Nesamomy Memorial Christian College was the Chief Guest. He gave a motivational talk about achievement of great leaders.
Departmental Activities of the academic year 2016-2017
- The inaugural meeting of the Economics Association was held on 09.08.2016 in the Assembly Hall at 1.00pm. The chief guest Mr.S.Kumararajan, Chairman of CAT course Delhi gave a talk on career Growth and Motivation. Ms.S. Jasmine was elected as the Secretary of Economics Association.
- Our department had arranged an Association meeting on 04.10.2016. Dr. T. Ramachandran , Principal in-charge of Govt Arts College, Nagercoil was the chief guest. He inspired the students by his useful and informative talk on the job opportunities for Economics students.
- Our student R. Haritha of II Economics won Second prize in the State level Quiz competition organized by Adigalar Quiz Club, IQAC and Alumni Association of Thiruvalluvar College, Papanasam held on 19. 08.2016.
- The valedictory meeting of our Association was held on 04.04.2017 at 2 pm, where Dr. Jeni Sanjana, assistant Professor of Economics, Holy Cross College, Nagercoil was the Chief Guest, delivered a lecture on ‘Job Orientation’.
