History of the Department

           In the late 1980s Computer Science was an emerging field and our management felt the need for higher education of women in this field in order to keep pace with the spurt of knowledge in Information Technology. The department of Computer Science was established on 20, July 1987. At present, the department has five well experienced teaching faculties and the student strength has increased to 48. We, as a department create awareness among the public and work towards imparting a basic knowledge in this dynamic field of Information Technology. We also strive to equip our students in the basic programming skills along with other creative skills.

  • Students are encouraged to participate in inter-collegiate technical symposiums and workshops.
  • The current technology is made aware to the students by organizing an inter-collegiate National Level Workshop every year.
  • Internet connectivity is provided to students through Broadband.
  • The Department library meets the specific needs of the students. The library is equipped with more than 300 books of recent editions of renowned authors and software tutorial DVDs.
  • The students in the final semester do a project in groups of four or five guided by the teaching faculty. Each group is responsible for planning, design and development of the project. It helps to improve their programming skills, communication and presentation skills and also helps them to realize the importance of team work.
  • The teaching faculty undergo FDP programmes on current topics like Cloud Computing , Big Data and VMWare.
  • A certificate course on Programming Essentials in Python is being conducted for our students for International Certification in association with ICTACT and Cisco NetAcademy.

She is serving as the IQAC Co-ordinator since 2012.She is the doctoral committee member of St.Joseph′s College(Autonomous) ,Thiruchirapalli. She received two awards namely Shiksha Rattan Pureskar in October 2012 at New Delhi and Best Citizen Award by International publishing house, New Delhi in February 2013.

Departmental Activities of the academic year 2020-2021
          A National Webinar on Recent Research Trends in Information Retrieval for faculty members was organized on July 27, 2021. Dr. R. Mahalakshmi, Associate Professor, Department of Computer Science and Engineering, Presidency University, Bangalore was the Resource Person. 210 faculty members across the nation participated.
         A National Level Online Technical Workshop on DART Programming Language was conducted on July 27, 2021 by Brain O Vision, Hyderabad for students. A Virtual Power Seminar on Data Science and its Application was held on 17th September 2020 in association with ICTACADEMY. Mr. Prasanth Ganesh, DeveOps Team Lead, RFPIO Inc was the Resource Person. A Counselling Programme was conducted for all our students on October 16, 2020.
         Our students attended an International Webinar on the topic “Empowerment of Human Life with Internet of Things” on 25/01/2021.
         Dr. G. Suganthi is the Chairperson of the UG Computer Science Board in Manonmaniam Sunadaranar University, Tirunelveli.
Departmental Activities of the academic year 2019-2020
          The Computer Science Association was inaugurated on 30th August 2019. Mr.S.P.Sasi Manoharan , General Manager, Apollo Computer Education, Nagercoil was the Chief Guest. Skill Connect Exam 2K19 was conducted by Networkz Systems, Nagercoil on 11th October 2019. A workshop on PhP and MySQL was conducted on 12/10/2019 for the final year students. An International Seminar on Computational Intelligence was conducted on 25-02-2020. Dr. Joseph Emerson Raja, Senior Lecturer, Faculty of Engineering and Technology, Multimedia University, Melaka, Malaysia and Dr. Chandrasekar Subramaniam, Former Professor, Anna University, Chennai were the Resourse Persons.On 21, May 2020, a Virtual Power Seminar was conducted on Employability Skills for the Future in association with ICTACT. Mr. Murali Rajasekar,TEDx Speaker, Director – Connect Training Solutions (P) Ltd was the speaker.
         A MOU was signed with LIVEWIRE – A Division of CADD Centre Training Services Pvt Ltd, Nagercoil on 18/07/2019 for Training & Certification on Advanced Technologies by specialized and certified instructors in the college premises. Training & Certification on Advanced Technologies in PYTHON was given to our final year students from 9th August 2019. A programme on “Technology and Soft Skills for IT/ITES sector” initiated by Labour and Employment Department through Tamil Nadu Skill Development Corporation and ICT Academy of Tamil Nadu was conducted for our final year students from 25/11/2019. We offered the course Data Science and Big Data Analytics with Soft skills. Ten students attended a Web Designing Workshop on 22nd Feb 2020 in FX Engineering College, Tirunelveli.
         Dr. D. Glory Ratna Mary attended Capacity Building Programme on ICT Enabled Effective Institutional Governance on24-06-2019 organized by the Manonmaniam Sundaranar University, Tirunelveli. She served as judge in Pudiya Thalaimurai’s VeetukuOruVignani programme in Mount Litera Zee School, Neyyoor on 22/08/2019. She conducted the workshop on PhP and MySQL was conducted on 12/10/2019 for the final year students.Mrs. T. Beula Darling attended a Faculty development programme in PHP Programming from 18-11-2019 to 22-11-2019 in St. Xavior’s Catholic college of Engineering, Chunkankadai.
         Dr. G. Suganthi received two research awards for her publications.

Departmental Activities of the academic year 2018-2019
         The Computer Science Association was inaugurated on 28th June 2018. Dr. S. Arumugha Perumal, HOD of Computer Science, S.T. Hindu College, Nagercoil was the Chief Guest and elucidated the current trends in the field of Computer Science like Block Chain, Internet of Things, Android Programming and Big Data Analytics. A seminar on “Android Programming” was conducted on 4th July 2018 in association with Networkz Systems, Trivandrum for our students. The III B.Sc. Computer Science students attended a workshop on VMWare Foundation Course – Data Center Virtualization Fundamentals in association with ICT Academy of Tamil Nadu on 21st July 2018. The final year students visited Planetarium, Science and Technology, Museum, Trivandrum on 29th September 2018. The department Alumnae met on 25th January 2019 and shared their experiences. Dr. G. Suganthi and Mrs. J.P. Smitha published a text book on Computer Architecture by Hill lamp Publications, Kanyakumari. Further our faculty members attended various seminars and conferences and presented a number of papers.
         M.Soniya, and I.K. Bhavithra of III B.Sc. Computer Science won the second prize for the event Quiz in CGATE 2018, organized by the Department of Computer Science, St. John’s College of Arts and Science, Ammandivilai. M. Soniya of final year won the second prize in English Elocution conducted on 24th January 2019 by Malabar Gold & Diamonds, Meenashipuram, Nagercoil on National Girl Child Day. Also she bagged the first prize in Tech &Non-tech Talk at the State Level Technical Symposium “Brain Power On’19” organized by the Department of Computer Applications, Scott Christian College, Nagercoil on 1st February 2019.
         T.G.Sowmiya , T.Subalekshmi , M.Soniya and T.V.Aswini, III B.Sc. Computer Science presented papers in the International Conference organized by the Research Forum of Women’s Christian College, Nagercoil on 22nd February 2019.
Departmental Activities of the academic year 2017-2018
          The Computer Science Association was inaugurated on 12th July 2017 at 10 a.m in the Assembly Hall. Dr. A. Shajin Nargunam, Director – Academic Affairs & Dean – Faculty of Information and Computer Engineering, N.I. University was the Chief Guest. A One Day Workshop on “Internet of Things (IoT) – The Connected Future” was conducted on 9th September 2017 in association with the Institution of Electronics and Telecommunication Engineers (IETE), Trivandrum and the Riyaas Lab, Nagercoil.About 116 students and 11 faculty members attended it.
         Dr. D. Glory Ratna Mary, Franka, L. Monisha, V.Jenila, Ajitha of III B.Sc Computer Science attended the One Day Workshop on “Internet of Things (IoT) – The Connected Future” on 5th August 2017 organized by the Institution of Electronics and Telecommunication Engineers (IETE). Dr. G. Suganthi published a text book on Programming principles and practice using Python by Hill lamp Publications, Kanyakumari.
         L. Monisha, III B.Sc Computer Science and M. Soniya, II B.Sc Computer Science won the Second Prize for the event Communication Satz in ELIXIR 2K17, organized by PG Computer Science, held on 31st August 2017 at Nesamony Memorial Christian College, Marthandam. L. Monisha & D. Femila of III B.Sc Computer Science won the First Prize in Quiz and M. Soniya of II B.Sc Computer Science won the First Prize in Techno- nontechno Talk at the National Level Symposium “Brain Power On 2K17” organized by the Department of Computer Applications, Scott Christian College (Autonomus), Nagercoil on 15th September 2017. The overall Champion Trophy was bagged by our students. T.G. Sowmiya and T. Subalakshmi of II B.Sc Computer Science won the first prize in Paper Presentation at the State Level Technical Symposium COMSAT2T172 organized by the department of Computer Application, Vivekananda College, Agasteeswaram, Kanyakumari District conducted on 4th October 2017. T.G. Sowmiya and T. Subalakshmi of II B.Sc Computer Science won the second prize in the Inter-Collegiate Technical Paper Presentation DIXSILJUB 2K18 organized by the department of Computer Science and Applications, South Travancore Hindu College, Nagercoil, Kanyakumari District conducted on 26th February 2018.
Departmental Activities of the academic year 2016-2017
          A workshop on Animation was conducted on August 17, 2017. 128 students were certified for Digital Literacy by National Digital Literacy Mission (NDLM). A workshop on Cloud Infrastructure and Services was held on 24th March 2017 by ICT Academy of Tamilnadu, Chennai for the final year students. 45 students of III B.Sc Computer Science students appeared for an International Certification Online Exam on 17th April 2017 by EMC2, Bangalore in association with ICTACT.
          A team of thirty students of III B.Sc Computer Science students and two staff members went on a study trip to Bangalore and Mysore from 25-08-2016 to 28-08-2016.

         Dr. D. Glory Ratna Mary attended the FDP on Data Center Virtualization fundamentals from 19th – 21st January 2017 at Stella Mary’s College of Engineering, Kanyakumari.
          Dr. G. Suganthi published her research papers in four different International Journals. She chaired a technical session and also presented a paper in the Second World Conference on Computing and Communication Technologies held at St.Joseph’s College (Autonomous) Tiruchirapalli between 2nd to 4th February 2017.

Alumnae
          The Computer Science Department Alumnae Meet is being conducted every year. Our Alumnae are thrilled to be back in the campus with fond memories and are excited sharing their experiences they have gone through till the day. The seniors counsel the juniors and we enjoy the day together.
