History of the Department
The Department of Tamil was established in the year 1975 with four faculty members. Mrs. Agnes Nallathamby was the first Head of the Department. At present the department has 12 faculty members out of which 9 of them have secured Ph.D. Degree. The department offers excellent coaching to the students. Financial help is rendered to poor students by the department. The department offers relevant subjects like Penniyam, Dhalithiyam, Payana Ilakkiyam and a Certificate Course in Mass Communication to enrich the knowledge of the students.

- To enable the student to acquire knowledge of the three aspects of Tamil namely Eyal, Isai and Natakam .

- To develop an aptitude for doing research in Tamil by the students and the faculty.
Highlights
- Our Department publishes a magazine named “Thendral” so as to develop the creative writing skills of our students..
- Every year a one day National Seminar is being conducted.
- Our students are empowered with technical skills. Job oriented courses like D.T.P., M.S. Office and Mass Communication are taught to our students.
- Our department students are encouraged to participate in various literary competitions in intercollegiate, University and state level.
- We have a well furnished library to develop the reading skills and for research purpose.

- Jane Sophia Isaac Scholarship is awarded to the Tamil Literature student who gets the highest mark in Part III subjects in the first five semesters.
- C.K. Dhas Memorial Scholarship is awarded to the student who gets the highest mark in Part I Tamil in the first four semesters.
- Beula Sampson Memorial Prize is awarded to the I B.A. Tamil student who is the best in Part III Major.
- Mrs. Chellammal Chinna Nadar Memorial Prize is awarded to the II B.A. Tamil student who is the best in Part III Major.
- Mrs. Agnes Nallathamby Memorial Scholarship is awarded to the III B.A. Tamil student who is the best in Part II English.
- Mr. Pauliah David Memorial Scholarship is awarded to the Tamil Major student who gets the highest mark in the University Examination of all the Six semesters.
- Mrs. Esther John Rose Memorial Scholarship is awarded to the Tamil Major student who gets the highest mark in Part I and Part II put together.
- Mr. G. John Rose Memorial Scholarship is awarded to the Outgoing Tamil Major student who is good in studies, extra-curricular activities and an all rounder.

Departmental Activities of the academic year 2020-2021
- Department of Tamil conducted on E-Quiz on the Topic Neethi Illakkiyangal on 01.07.2020 to 03.07.2020. Again another E-Quiz was conducted on 01.08.2020 on the Topic Vidukathaigal.
- A 10 days International Web-Workshop was conducted on Kartal Karpithal Nokil Illakanam Illakiam on 11.08.2020 to 20.08.2020.
- A Debate on Karthal Muraiyil Tharamanathu online or offline was conducted on 05.02.2021. Seven Students participated in the Debate.
- An Association meeting was held on 20.02.2021 in Seminar Hall 2. The Guest Speaker was Dr. Sugirtha Basmath, Assistant Professor of Tamil, Government Arts and Science College, Konam. She spoke about Penngalum Alumaiyum.
- On 12.03.2021 Alumane Meeting was conducted and few of our students came and spoke about their sweet memories of this college.
Departmental Activities of the academic year 2019-2020
- The inaugural Function of Tamil Literary Association was held on 24.08.2019. Dr. Ida, Assistant Professor of Holy Cross College, Nagercoil delivered Lecture on the Topic Marapiyal Kappom.
- An Interdepartmental Elocution, Essay Writing, Verse Writing, Drawing Competitions were conducted on 10.07.2019.
- Dr. D. Sheeja attended a Refresher course at HRDC University of Kerala from 24.04.2019 to 14.05.2019 and a workshop on Tamil Malayalam Lexicography from 07.1.2020 to 10.01.2020 in the University of Kerala.
- Dr. K. Mabel Jain, Dr. Y. Pappa and Dr. A Jaya Esklin attended a Refresher course at HRDC University of Kerala from 15.05.2019 to 4.06.2019.
- Dr. R. Punitha Salem Jeevi and Dr.J. Sangeetha attended Orientation programme at HRDC Bharathidhasan University, Trichy from 12.11.2019 to 2.12.2019.
- Dr. D. Sheeja published and released a book Varma Nithanam on 14th December 2019 in Press Club, Trivandrum.
- All the staff members attended the International Conference on Innovations in Research organized by the Research Forum of Women’s Christian College, Nagercoil on 28.01.2020. They also attended the workshop on Drama Teaching and Learning Process on 17 & 18 September 2019 at Women’s Christian College, Nagercoil.
- Dr. A. Jaya Esklin attended a Red Ribbon Club Peer Educators Training Programme on 15.02.2020 organized by M.S. University, Tirunelveli.
- Dr. R. Kala Gnana Selvam, Dr. K. Mabel Jain, Dr. D. Sheeja, Dr. A. Jaya Esklin, Dr. R. Punitha Salem Jeevi, Dr.J. Sangeetha and Dr. D. Beula attended the workshop on Rights of Women and Children and Woman Rights Strategize on 10-12-2019 at Women’s Christian College, Nagercoil.
- An Interdepartmental Quiz Competition was conducted on 12.10.2018.
- Dr. R. Kala Gnana Selvam, Dr. K. Mabel Jain, Dr. D. Sheeja, and Dr. J. Jeslin Nima were awarded Perasiriyar Mamani Viruthu by Tamilnadu Kalai Illakiya Kalagam.
- Dr. D. Sheeja received the District Level Youth ed Cross Best Programme Officer Award and District Level Best Women’s Achiever Award.
- Dr. D. Beula, Dr. K. Mabel Jain, and Dr. J. Jeslin Nima were awarded Seva Rathna Viruthu by Kaviyarasar Kalai Tamil Sangam.
- Dr. D. Beula and Dr. Dela Christabel were awarded Sathanai Cemmal Viruthu by Kaviyarasar Kalai Tamil Sangam.
- Dr. D. Beula was awarded Tamil Illakkiya Vithagar Viruthu by Shanalax International Journal of Tamil Studies.
- Dr. A. Jaya Esklin received the Campus Ambassador Viruthu from the District collector.
- Tamil Department conducted a Two day workshop on Drama Teaching and Learning Process from 17.09.2019 to 18.09.2019.

- The inaugural function of Tamil Literary Association was held on 31.07.2018. Dr. Rama Kumar,Assistant Professor, Vivekannanda College, Agasteeswaram, Kanyakumari District was the guest speaker. He delivered a lecture on the Topic Illakiathil Enimai.
- Dr. D. Dela Isabel attended a Refresher course at Bharathiar University, Coimbatore from 17.05.2018 to 06.06.2018.
- Dr. D. Sheeja attended one week workshop on Testing & Evaluation and Question item writing in Tamil conducted by National Testing Service India held at Central Institute of Indian Languages, Mysore from 4th to 8th June 2018.
- Tranz India Pvt Corporate Ltd conducted a Job Awareness Programme on 30.07.2018 for both Tamil and Economics Final year students.
- Dr. R. Punitha Salem Jeevi attended a FDP on Creative Thinking conducted by ICT Academy on 27th & 28th August 2018 at Women’s Christian College, Nagercoil.
- A Seminar was held on 31.08.2018 for both Tamil and History Department students on the topic History of the Tamils.
- An Interdepartmental Quiz Competition was conducted on 12.10.2018.
- Dr. R. Kala Gnana Selvam, Dr. D. Sheeja, Dr. D. Beula, Dr. J. Jeslin Nima and Dr. Dela Christabel were awarded Tamil Ozhi Viruthu by Aagathia Mamunivan Kalai Illakia Punpadtu Aaivu Maiyam.
- The Valedictory meeting of the Tamil Association was conducted on 4th February 2019. Mrs. S.V. Shalini was the guest speaker.
Departmental Activities of the academic year 2017-2018
- An Association meeting was held on 24.08.2017, Rtd Tamil Teacher M.D. Periyavan was the guest speaker. He enlightened the students on the Topic Tamil Mozhiyin Thonmai.
- Three professors along with 30 students went on an educational trip to Thiruvanathapuram visiting Kerala Gauthami, Malayala Manorama Printing Press and Kerala University on 16th September 2017.
- Dr. D. Sheeja served as the Chairperson for National seminar on Recent Studies in Dravidian Comparative Grammer organized by the Department of Tamil, Kerala University on 2nd March 2018.
- Dr. K. Mabel Jain, Dr. Y. Pappa and Dr. A. Jaya Esklin attended an Orientation programme at Bharathidasan University, Tiruchirapalli from 15.11.2017 to 12.12.2017.
- Dr. D. Sheeja was awarded Aagathiar Gnana Sudar Viruthu by Aagathia Mamunivan Kalai Illakia Punpadtu Aaivu Maiyam.
- Dr. A. Jaya Esklin and Dr.J. Sangeetha attended NSS Orientation programme at Avinashilingam University, Coimbatore from 1.2.2018 to 7.2.2018
- The Valedictory meeting of the Tamil Association was conducted on 21.3.2018. Dr. Raja Sree, Assistant Professor, Scott Christian College, Nagercoil was the guest speaker.

- An Association meeting was held on 20.09.2016, Dr. S. Joseph Robin, Associate Professor, Scott Christian College was the guest speaker. He enlightened the students on the Topic Illakiamum Samuthayamum.
- Dr. R. Kala Gnana Selvam attended two days orientation workshop on Local Capacities for Peace/Do No Harm organized at Women’s Christian College facilitated by Trainer of LCP South Asia Network on 11th and 12th August 2016.
- Dr. R. Kala Gnana Selvam attended a refresher course in Tamil at HRDC Pondicherry from 08.11.2016 to 28.11.2016
- Dr. R. Kala Gnana Selvam got an award from Puducherry Tamil Sangam as Tamil Chemmal on 26.11.2016.
- Dr. D. Sheeja served as the Chairperson on 3rd International seminar of SVASH 2016 conducted by Swami Vivekananda Association of science and humanities on 13th August 2016.
- Dr. K. Mabel Jain and Dr. D. Sheeja attended a training programme on 21.09.2016 conducted by Consumer Protection Dept New Delhi along with concert from Chennai at Women’s Christian College, Nagercoil.
- Dr. Ida Selva Rani and Dr. D. Sheeja were awarded Aagathiar Viruthu by Aagathia Mamunivan Kalai Illakia Punpadtu Aaivu Maiyam.

- M. Alista and J. Golda Jancy of III Tamil participated in the one-day young writers workshop on creative writing (YWCW) at Women’s Christian College, Nagercoil on 03.12.2016 conducted by Chuvadukal Iraiyiyal Ithal and the chair on Christian Studies Manonmaniam Sundaranar University.
- An Association Meeting was held on 03.03.2017. Dr. Nagaleshmi, Assistant Professor, S.T. Hindu College was the guest speaker. She enlightened the students on the Topic Illakia Charu.
- The department of Tamil organised a National seminar on Tharkala Illakiamum Penniamum on 17.03.2017.
