History of the Department
The department was established in the year 1973 with pre-university class and became an undergraduate department in the year 1979. The Department of Mathematics believes in creating women mathematicians who have a well- rounded personality and it has sent nearly 38 batches of excelling students with many rank holders each year. Almost all of our alumnae are employed in Arts and Science Colleges, Engineering colleges, Nationalised Banks, Post Offices and schools. It has functioned marvellously under the former heads of the department Mrs. Pugal Sampson, Mrs. Muthammal Jahi, Dr.D.Wiselet, Mrs.P.Nalatha Padmini and Dr.C. Nirmala Kumari. The present head of the department is Dr. S.N. Leena Nelson. The dedicated teaching faculty Dr. Leena Nelson, Dr. Muthu Nesa Beula, Dr.T.Anitha Baby Dr. Jaslin Melbha and Dr. Vijayakumari Saradha serve with commitment.
About Us
Vision

To achieve excellence and to stand out as a eminent centre of teaching in Mathematics by offering quality Mathematics education and to make them employable, self reliant and endowed with skills of logic and reasoning giving equal importance to human values also.

Mission

To develop generations of efficient mathematics professionals by providing excellent foundation at graduate level acquiring deep knowledge and to serve the community with commitment.

Objectives
  1. Knowledge and understanding are fundamental to studying mathematics and from which to explore concepts and develop problem-solving skills. Through knowledge and understanding students develop mathematical reasoning to make deductions and solve problems.
  2. Students should be able to know and demonstrate understanding of the concepts from the five branches of mathematics (number, algebra, geometry and trigonometry, statistics and probability, and discrete mathematics.
  3. Students should be able to use appropriate mathematical concepts and skills to solve problems in both familiar and unfamiliar situations including those in real-life contexts.
  4. Students should be able to select and apply general rules correctly to solve problems including those in real-life contexts.
  5. Mathematics provides a powerful and universal language. Students are expected to use mathematical language appropriately when communicating mathematical ideas, reasoning and findings both orally and in writing.
  6. Students should be able to communicate mathematical ideas, reasoning and findings by the use of appropriate mathematical language (notation, symbols, terminology) in both oral and written explanations and in different forms of mathematical representation (formulae, diagrams, tables, charts, graphs and models).
  7. Students are encouraged to choose and use ICT tools as appropriate and, where available, to enhance communication of their mathematical ideas. ICT tools can include graphic display calculators, screenshots, graphing, spreadsheets, databases, and drawing and word-processing software.
  8. Students are encouraged to share their thinking with teachers and peers and to examine different problem-solving strategies. Critical reflection in mathematics helps students gain insight into their strengths and weaknesses as learners and to appreciate the value of errors as powerful motivators to enhance learning and understanding.
Highlights
  • Students are encouraged to present mathematical articles in the association meetings.
  • Recreational mathematical work is assigned to students during vacation.
  • A collection of PowerPoint presentations and some ‘Mathematical Today’ books and some mathematical articles are available in the department to be used during free hours. Some mathematical models made by students are preserved in the department to create awareness about models.
  • Creative Maths Album Competition, Maths Models Competitions, Maths Song Composing, Mathematical Origami Competitions are conduced regularly.
  • An Annual mathematical magazine ‘Math-Chip’ with articles from maths students is published each year.
  • Orientation and bridge course are conducted by the department staff for the freshers.
Programme Outcomes

PO1. Inculcate critical thinking to carry out scientific investigation objectively without being biased with preconceived notions.

PO2. Equip the student with skills to analyze problems, formulate an hypothesis, evaluate and validate results, and draw reasonable conclusions thereof.

PO3. Prepare students for pursuing research or careers in industry in mathematical sciences and allied fields.

PO4. Imbibe effective scientific and technical communication in both oral and writing.

PO5. Continue to acquire relevant knowledge and skills appropriate to professional activities and demonstrate highest standards of ethical issues in mathematical sciences.

PO6. Create awareness to become an enlightened citizen with commitment to deliver one’s responsibilities within the scope of bestowed rights and privileges.

Programme Specific Outcomes

PSO1. Understanding of the fundamental axioms in mathematics and capability of developing ideas based on them.

PSO2. Inculcate mathematical reasoning.

PSO3. Prepare and motivate students for research studies in mathematics and related fields.

PSO4. Provide knowledge of a wide range of mathematical techniques and application of mathematical methods/tools in other scientific and engineering domains.

PSO5. Provide advanced knowledge on topics in pure mathematics, empowering the students to pursue higher degrees at reputed academic institutions.

PSO6. Strong foundation on algebraic topology and representation theory which have strong links and application in theoretical physics, in particular string theory.
