History of the Department

          The P.G. Chemistry Department was established in Women’s Christian College on 17.07.2009. In the year 2011, M.Phil. was introduced with six students and a new staff was recruited for the same. The department is offering quality education in a good way to make students employable. The Department provides the best for the students and encourages in research activities. Four faculty members have acquired their doctorate degrees and two staff is pursuing research. The department has three approved research guide under M.S. University. Our department has a well equipped laboratory, a separate library with a good collection of books in diverse branches of Chemistry and a computer laboratory with internet facility. The Research Centre of the Department of Chemistry was established in the year 2012. At present 23 scholars are perusing their Ph D work.

Objectives
  1. To impart a foundation of chemistry of sufficient breadth and depth to enable them to understand and critically interpret the primary chemical literature.
  2. To disseminate knowledge on the interdisciplinary nature of chemistry and to integrate knowledge of mathematics, physics and other disciplines to a wide variety of chemical problems.
  3. To enable the Students to use presentation tools to create effective tables, graphs, and chemical structures.
  4. To learn the laboratory skills needed to design, safely conduct and interpret chemical research.
  5. To enable the students to use chemicals without harming the environment.
Highlights
  • The department is equipped with internet facilities to offer the students a meaningful foundation in e-learning.
  • The department gives an initiation into research by training the students in presenting papers.
  • The department encourages students to compete in competitive exams like NET, SLET.
  • There is a special coaching class for the under performers to make them successful.
  • We in the department train the students to present paper by conducting paper presentation session once in two months.
  • The students are trained to take seminars.
  • We in the department conduct National seminar in which we have eminent personalities as talkers.

Dr. R.Ajitha has been working as Assistant Professor in the department of Chemistry, WCC, Nagercoil since 2010. She awarded Ph.D by the Manonmanium Sundaranar University in 2016.Her area of specialization is Polymer Chemistry. She guided six M.Phil scholars successfully. She has published many papers in National and International level journals. At present, she is serving as guide for two Ph.D scholar and co-guide for one Ph.D scholar.
Assistant ProfessorDr. P. Kavitha

Dr.P.Kavitha has been working as Assistant Professor in the department of Chemistry, WCC, Nagercoil since 2010. She was awarded Ph.D by the Manonmanium Sundaranar University in 2016. Her doctoral research is on Environmental Hydro and Geo Chemistry which is a special area of her interest. She has published many research papers in National and International journals. Also she has presented research articles in National and International conferences/seminars. Dissertation guidance given to four M. Phil students and several M.Sc students. She has participated various National/International conferences and seminars. She is a recognized research guide in Chemistry of Manonmanium Sundaranar University and guiding 4 Research Scholars.

Mrs S.Sofia has been working as Assistant Professor in the department of Chemistry, WCC, Nagercoil since 2009.

Ms.N.Shiny has been appointed as Assistant Professor in Department of Chemistry, since 2017. She is the alumini of this college. She has published various articles in journals and presented papers in conferences and seminars. Her area of research is Polymer Chemistry.
Assistant ProfessorDr.N.J.Sangeetha
M.Sc., M.Ed., M.Phil., Ph.D.,
Dr. N. J. Sangeetha, has been working as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Chemistry. She took her Doctoral degree in 2016. Her Research Topic entitled, “Studies on Some Novel Polyurethane Composites based on Natural Products”. She has published 22 articles in different National/International Journals. She has presented 7 papers in various conferences/ seminars. She has attended 5 conferences/seminars too. She has published 2 books. She is serving as a guide for four Ph.D scholars and got award for a scholar.
Assistant ProfessorDr.P.Ethalsha
M.Sc., M.Phil., Ph.D
Dr. P. Ethalsha, has been working as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Chemistry. She has completed her doctoral degree in 2016. Her research area is entitled “Phytochemical and Biological Evaluation of Ipomoea pes-caprae (L.) R. Br. and Catharanthus roseus (L.) G. Don”. She has published 10 papers in various international Journals. She has attended national and international conferences
Awards
  1. Prof. Joy Mohandhas Endowment is awarded to the first two students in I PG Chemistry who secures the highest mark in UG and was a student of WCC in UG.
Departmental Activities of the academic year 2020-2021
  • An Orientation programme was conducted for I M.Sc. Chemistry students on 24.08.2020 to understand the complete realm of college life from academics to social activities.
  • A state level webinar on Campaign against Nuclear Weapon in this Covid Era was organized by the Department on 06.11.2020. A renowned Scientific Officer Shri.A.V.Sathish of Nuclear Power Plant, Kudankulam served as the resource person and he delivered a motivational talk about Nuclear weapons.
  • The Freshers day was celebrated in our Department on 15.02.2021.
  • The Alumnae Meeting was held on 31.03.2021 and had a good fellowship with the old students.
  • The Valedictory meeting of our association was conducted on 21.04.2021 through online mode. Dr.Issac Sobana Raj, Associate Professor of Chemistry, Nesamony Memorial Christian College, Marthandam was the chief guest and delivered a thought provoking talk on Nature and Scope of Chemistry.
Departmental Activities of the academic year 2019-2020
  • The Freshers of the Department were cordially welcomed by the seniors on 23.07.2019.
  • The Inauguration of Chemistry Association for the academic year 2019-2020 was held on 05.08 2019. Dr. A.Amal Raj, Principal & Associate Professor, Department of Chemistry , St.Jerome’s College of Arts and Science, Ananthanadarkudy was the chief guest. He delivered a talk on Origin of Green Chemistry.
  • 36 students and three staff members went on a Four days tour to Mysore, Coorg & Chik-Mangalore from 25.09.2019 to 29.09.2019. They also visited Soap manufacturing company which gave a great and memorable experience.
  • The Department shared the Joy of Giving by distributing gift boxes to the parents of poor students and poor workers of our college.
  • The ALUM MEET-2020 of the Alumnae Association of the Department of Chemistry was held on 14.03.2020 at 2.00 p.m.
  • A national webinar on “ Novelties of Green Chemistry” was organized by the Department on 30.05.2020. A renowned Professor of Organic Chemistry Dr.Anil Kumar Gopinathan, School of Chemical Sciences, Mahatma Gandhi University, Kottayam, Kerala and Dr. Ani Deepthi, Assistant Professor of Chemistry, University of Kerala, Kariavattom, Trivandrum served as resource persons.
Departmental Activities of the academic year 2018-2019
  • The inauguration of Chemistry Association for the academic year 2018-2019 was held on 25-07-2018. The importance of “Polymers” was pictured clearly by Dr. M. Chandran, Associate Professor, Department of Chemistry, Vivekananda College of Arts and Science on that day.
  • To train up our students as professional careers in chemistry, as skilled entry level employees in industry and to promote the research activities of our students, a one-day workshop on “Entrepreneurship training on preparation of simple chemical products” was organized on 11-09-2018. The participants received the first hand information to prepare various chemical products such as tooth powder, tooth paste, wash liquid, cleaning powder, face powder etc.
  • All our students attended the Seminar organized by Research Forum of W.C.C on 22.02.2019.
  • The Department arranged for a tour and I.V during the mid-semester holidays- March 2019. II.M.Sc students accompanied by three staff members went to NIIST, Trivandrum and visit Kovalam.
  • The ALUM MEET – 2019 of the Alumnae Association of the Department of Chemistry was held on 29-01-2019 at 3 p.m. All the existing professors of chemistry department and 7 alumnae in total participated the meeting.
Departmental Activities of the academic year 2017-2018
  • The freshers of our department were welcomed wholeheartedly by the seniors on 24-07-2017.
  • The inaugural function of our association for the academic year 2017-2018 was held on 28-07-2017. Dr. R. Ragel Mabel Saroja, Associate Professor, SCC, Nagercoil, delivered a talk on “Wonders of Background Radiation”.
  • A workshop on Microscale Experiments was conducted on 08 – 08 – 2017 to save chemicals and to make pollution free environment in the lab.
  • A National Seminar on ‘Environmental issues at the Global Level’ was organized by the department on 09- 02-2018. The meeting was presided over by the honorable Correspondent Prof. V. Sunder Raj. Shri. A. V. Sathish, Scientist, Nuclear Power Plant, Kudankulam and Dr. V. Salom Gnana Thanga, Associate Professor, Department of Environmental Sciences were the eminent speakers of the day
Departmental Activities of the academic year 2016-2017
  • On 26- 07- 2016, Fresher’s Day was organized by the seniors of our department to welcome wholeheartedly the juniors.
  • The Chemistry association for the academic year 2016-2017 was inaugurated by Dr. C. Justin Dhana Raj, Assistant Professor, University College of Engineering, Konam on 01-09-2016. He shared his experiences in Forensic Department and explained how chemistry could be a solution to crime.
  • An association meeting was conducted on 30-09-2016 by the students.
  • On 11- 02- 2017, an alumnae meet was arranged and it was a joyful moment.
  • A National Seminar on Advanced Frontiers in Chemistry was organized by the department on 27- 02 – 2017 to know the advanced trends in chemistry.
  • The Valedictory meeting of our association was conducted on 23- 3-2017 and Dr. Malar Retna, Assistant Professor, Scott Christian College was the guest of honour . She emphasized the importance of Natural Organic Products.
Alumnae
        The alumni meet is conducted every year and is graced by the alumni members ranging across various batches from different institution. It is matter of great pride for the Department that its Alumni are holding positions of responsibility in various Government organizations, Private sectors and Academic Institutions. The Alumni interactions are done for the improvement of the department and in good relationships. All members share their views, ideas and new insights come up.
