Tamil Department

History of the Department

TThe Department of Tamil was established in the year 1975 with four faculty members. Mrs. Agnes Nallathamby was the first Head of the Department. At present the department has 12 faculty members out of which 9 of them have secured Ph.D. Degree. The department offers excellent coaching to the students. Financial help is rendered to poor students by the department. The department offers relevant subjects like Penniyam, Dhalithiyam, Payana Ilakkiyam and a Certificate Course in Mass Communication to enrich the knowledge of the students.

To give special attention to the first generation - learners to impart quality education, and to equip them with skills and values to enable them to face the challenges of life.

Mission

To provide a unique experience to enable the students to be self reliant and socially responsible.

Objectives

  1. To enable the student to acquire knowledge of the three aspects of Tamil namely Eyal, Isai and Natakam.
  2. To understand the history of Tamil literature.
  3. To understand the creative writing in Tamil literature.
  4. To develop an aptitude for doing research in Tamil by the students and the faculty.

Highlights

  1. Our Department publishes a magazine named "Thendal" so as to develop the creative writing skills of our students.
  2. Every year a one day National Seminar is being conducted.
  3. Our students are empowered with technical skills. Job oriented courses like D.T.P., M.S. Office and Mass Communication are taught to our students.
  4. Our department students are encouraged to participate in various literary competitions in intercollegiate, University and state level.
  5. We have a well furnished library to develop the reading skills and for research purpose.

Programme Outcomes

  1. Tamil being one of the Ancient Language in the world requires greater responsibility in the students to have a strong foundation and wider knowledge of the Language.
  2. Tamil Literature is way of a life. It focuses on the historical significance of ethics, moral culture in the Tamil context.
  3. To get an updated knowledge of Tamil.
  4. To teach and create knowledge of the Poetry,Short Stories ,Drama and Prose.

Dr. R. Kala Gnana Selvam an alumni of WCC started her career as lecturer in the year 2001. She has attended 15 national level seminars and workshops and presented 15 papers. She has served as the programme officer in NSS (Unit No.134) for 6 years. She is a recognized research guide in M.S. University.

Dr. K. Mabel Jain joined as a lecturer in this college in 2002. She has presented 8 papers in national seminars. She is the member of SCM and Library Committee.

Dr. D. Dela Isabel has been serving in the Department of Tamil since 07.08.2009. She has presented 10 papers in International and National conferences. She has attended 15 National Seminars. She has been serving as the programme officer in NSS (Unit No.163) since 01.06.2011.

Dr. Y. Pappa has been serving in the Department of Tamil since 29.07.2010. She has presented 25 papers in International and National Conferences. She has attended 20 National seminars. She is serving as a member of the social service committee.

Dr. D. Sheeja has been serving in the Department of Tamil since 13.08.2010. She has passed NET in the year 2007. She serves as the Research Guide of the M.S. University and guiding 3 students. She has presented 30 papers in International and National Conferences. She has attended 12 National Seminars. She has published 2 books namely "Viduthalai Villuppattukal and Varma Sutheram". She is a recognized research guide in M.S. University.

Dr. D.Dela Christabel has been working as a Assistant Professor in this institution since 14/09/2015. She has presented 5 papers in International and National Conferences. She has attended 7 Seminars.

  1. Jane Sophia Isaac Scholarship is awarded to the Tamil Literature student who gets the highest mark in Part III subjects in the first five semesters.
  2. C.K. Dhas Memorial Scholarship is awarded to the student who gets the highest mark in Part I Tamil in the first four semesters.
  3. Beula Sampson Memorial Prize is awarded to the I B.A. Tamil student who is the best in Part III Major.
  4. Mrs. Chellammal Chinna Nadar Memorial Prize is awarded to the II B.A. Tamil student who is the best in Part III Major.
  5. Mrs. Agnes Nallathamby Memorial Scholarship is awarded to the III B.A. Tamil student who is the best in Part II English.
  6. Mr. Pauliah David Memorial Scholarship is awarded to the Tamil Major student who gets the highest mark in the University Examination of all the Six semesters.
  7. Mrs. Esther John Rose Memorial Scholarship is awarded to the Tamil Major student who gets the highest mark in Part I and Part II put together.
  8. Mr. G. John Rose Memorial Scholarship is awarded to the Outgoing Tamil Major student who is good in studies, extra-curricular activities and an all rounder.

Alumnae

The Tamil Department Alumnae Meet is being conducted every year. Our Alumnae are thrilled to be back in the campus with fond memories and are excited sharing their experiences they have gone through till the day. The seniors counsel the juniors and we enjoy the day together.

Activities of the academic year 2023-2024

On 26.09.2023 the inaugural function of Tamil Association was organized on the topic 'Ara Illakkiyankal'. The guest speaker was Dr. K.C. Kolappadhas, Associate Professor of Pionnier Kumaraswamy College.

An Elocution competition was conducted on 09.12.2023 in commemoration "Muthamizharignar Kalaingar"


In connection with Tamil Aatchimozhi Chatta Vizha a Rally was conducted in collecterate on 27.12.2023. Our department students and two teaching faculties participated.

Our Department and Tamil Valarchi Thurai organized and executed District Level Intercollegiate competitions on 11.01.2024.

The Valedictory Meeting of the Tamil Association was conducted 25th March 2024. Dr. Rajaram, great speaker in Pattimantram and Former Head of Tamil Department, Velaichamy Nadar College, Madurai as guest speaker.

On 12.04.2024 Alumane meeting of Tamil Association was conducted. About 28 students came over and shared their experience.

Activities of the academic year 2022-2023

An Elocution Competition was conducted by Vivekananda Kendram, Kanyakumari on 15.08.2022. M.P. Aathira got I Prize.

Alumnae Meeting was conducted on 17.09.2022. Few of our students came and they spoke about their sweet memories of this college. They were all happy to meet their teachers.

Our Department conducted Tamil Association Inaugural Function on 30.09.2022. The guest speaker was Dr. J. Kingsley, Assistant Professor of Scott Christian College (Autonomous), Nagercoil. The spoke on the topic "Aarokiamana valvu"

A special talk on Siddha Maruthuvathin Chirappukkal" was conducted by our department on 09.01.2023. Dr. Jayanthi was the guest speaker.

An Elocution competition was conducted by Sree Ayyappa College for Women, Chunkankadai on 21.02.2022. Ms. K.S. Ahalya got I prize.

Our department valedictory function was conducted on 15.03.2023. Dr. Ancy Mol Assistant professor and Head of the department of Tamil (S.F) of Holy Cross College (Autonomous), Nagercoil gave a motivational talk on "Thai Mozhiyin Chirappukkal"

Activities of the academic year 2021-2022

Department of Tamil started its activity with the Essay Competition and slogan writing on 23.09.2021. Students from all departments of our college participated Dr. Dela Isabel, Dr. D. Beula and Dr. D. Dela Christabel selected the student for government competition conducted by Tamil Nadu water board.

Workshop on "Pavanar Paintamil Kodai" was conducted from 04.10.2021 to 9.10.2021. It was conducted on online. The chief guest was Thiru. Padumanar. He spoke about "Pavanar's Contribution in Tamil Language".

On October 18th Alumnae meeting was conducted by our department few of our old students came and shared their experience.

Nesamony Institute of religion and Society conducted Elocution Competition on account of 65th Anniversary. Dr. Punitha and Dr. Delbin conducted Elocution Competition and selected the students for the competition. Ms. Aathira bagged first place and received cash Rs.8000/-.

Our Department conducted Essay Competition on the topic "Suthanthira Indiyavin Nilaipadu" on 09.11.2021. The list of selected candidates were given to the J.D. Office, Tirunelveli.

On 24.11.2021 History and Tamil Department combined and conducted "Ulaga Vara Vizha". Mr. Kalishwaran, Government Archaelogical Department officer spoke about stone, coins which was found by the archeological department.

Bharathiar Day celebration was conducted on 09.12.2021. Our Principal Dr. C.M. Padma was the guest speaker. Barathiar Songs Competition was conducted. The winners were given prize by our principal.

Sri Iyyappa College conducted Barathiar Day Competition on 10.12.2021. Our students participated and scored highest points and got the rolling cup.

Our department conducted Association inaugural function on 13.12.2021. The guest speaker was Dr. S. Alex Jacob, Assistant Professor of Annai Velankani College. The spoke on the topic Valvai Neripaduthum Tamil Illakiyangal.

On 12.01.2022 Pongal festival was celebrated in our department in a grand manner. Distributed Pongal to all the staff in the college. It was delicious Pongal.

On account of 75th Independence day celebration the district level elocution competition was conducted on 28.03.2022 by Government Arts and Science College, Konam. Our student M.P. Aathira II B.A. Tamil secured I prize.

On April 9th Alumnae Meeting was conducted by our department. Twenty four students of our old students came and shared their Experience and had a nice time with them.

The Department of Tamil celebrated the "Joy of Giving" with a visit to an orphanage near Asaripallam. The students and staff experienced the Joy of Giving by offering fruits and snacks.

Activities of the academic year 2020-2021

  1. Department of Tamil conducted on E-Quiz on the Topic Neethi Illakkiyangal on 01.07.2020 to 03.07.2020. Again another E-Quiz was conducted on 01.08.2020 on the Topic Vidukathaigal.
  2. A 10 days International Web-Workshop was conducted on Kartal Karpithal Nokil Illakanam Illakiam on 11.08.2020 to 20.08.2020.
  3. A Debate on Karthal Muraiyil Tharamanathu online or offline was conducted on 05.02.2021. Seven Students participated in the Debate.
  4. An Association meeting was held on 20.02.2021 in Seminar Hall 2. The Guest Speaker was Dr. Sugirtha Basmath, Assistant Professor of Tamil, Government Arts and Science College, Konam. She spoke about Penngalum Alumaiyum.
  5. On 12.03.2021 Alumane Meeting was conducted and few of our students came and spoke about their sweet memories of this college.

Activities of the academic year 2019-2020

  1. The inaugural Function of Tamil Literary Association was held on 24.08.2019. Dr. Ida, Assistant Professor of Holy Cross College, Nagercoil delivered Lecture on the Topic Marapiyal Kappom.
  2. An Interdepartmental Elocution, Essay Writing, Verse Writing, Drawing Competitions were conducted on 10.07.2019.
  3. Dr. D. Sheeja attended a Refresher course at HRDC University of Kerala from 24.04.2019 to 14.05.2019 and a workshop on Tamil Malayalam Lexicography from 07.1.2020 to 10.01.2020 in the University of Kerala.
  4. Dr. K. Mabel Jain, Dr. Y. Pappa and Dr. A Jaya Esklin attended a Refresher course at HRDC University of Kerala from 15.05.2019 to 4.06.2019.
  5. Dr. R. Punitha Salem Jeevi and Dr.J. Sangeetha attended Orientation programme at HRDC Bharathidhasan University, Trichy from 12.11.2019 to 2.12.2019.
  6. Dr. D. Sheeja published and released a book Varma Nithanam on 14th December 2019 in Press Club, Trivandrum.
  7. All the staff members attended the International Conference on Innovations in Research organized by the Research Forum of Women's Christian College, Nagercoil on 28.01.2020. They also attended the workshop on Drama Teaching and Learning Process on 17 & 18 September 2019 at Women's Christian College, Nagercoil.
  8. Dr. A. Jaya Esklin attended a Red Ribbon Club Peer Educators Training Programme on 15.02.2020 organized by M.S. University, Tirunelveli.

  12. Dr. D. Sheeja received the District Level Youth ed Cross Best Programme Officer Award and District Level Best Women's Achiever Award.
  13. Dr. D. Beula, Dr. K. Mabel Jain, and Dr. J. Jeslin Nima were awarded Seva Rathna Viruthu by Kaviyarasar Kalai Tamil Sangam.
  14. Dr. D. Beula and Dr. Dela Christabel were awarded Sathanai Cemmal Viruthu by Kaviyarasar Kalai Tamil Sangam.
  15. Dr. D. Beula was awarded Tamil Illakkiya Vithagar Viruthu by Shanalax International Journal of Tamil Studies.
  16. Dr. A. Jaya Esklin received the Campus Ambassador Viruthu from the District collector.
  17. Tamil Department conducted a Two day workshop on Drama Teaching and Learning Process from 17.09.2019 to 18.09.2019.

Activities of the academic year 2018-2019

  1. The inaugural function of Tamil Literary Association was held on 31.07.2018. Dr. Rama Kumar,Assistant Professor, Vivekannanda College, Agasteeswaram, Kanyakumari District was the guest speaker. He delivered a lecture on the Topic Illakiathil Enimai.
  2. Dr. D. Dela Isabel attended a Refresher course at Bharathiar University, Coimbatore from 17.05.2018 to 06.06.2018.
  3. Dr. D. Sheeja attended one week workshop on Testing & Evaluation and Question item writing in Tamil conducted by National Testing Service India held at Central Institute of Indian Languages, Mysore from 4th to 8th June 2018.
  4. Tranz India Pvt Corporate Ltd conducted a Job Awareness Programme on 30.07.2018 for both Tamil and Economics Final year students.
  5. Dr. R. Punitha Salem Jeevi attended a FDP on Creative Thinking conducted by ICT Academy on 27th & 28th August 2018 at Women's Christian College, Nagercoil.
  6. A Seminar was held on 31.08.2018 for both Tamil and History Department students on the topic History of the Tamils.
  7. An Interdepartmental Quiz Competition was conducted on 12.10.2018.
  8. Dr. R. Kala Gnana Selvam, Dr. D. Sheeja, Dr. D. Beula, Dr. J. Jeslin Nima and Dr. Dela Christabel were awarded Tamil Ozhi Viruthu by Aagathia Mamunivan Kalai Illakia Punpadtu Aaivu Maiyam.
  9. The Valedictory meeting of the Tamil Association was conducted on 4th February 2019. Mrs. S.V. Shalini was the guest speaker.

Activities of the academic year 2017-2018

  1. An Association meeting was held on 24.08.2017, Rtd Tamil Teacher M.D. Periyavan was the guest speaker. He enlightened the students on the Topic Tamil Mozhiyin Thonmai.
  2. Three professors along with 30 students went on an educational trip to Thiruvanathapuram visiting Kerala Gauthami, Malayala Manorama Printing Press and Kerala University on 16th September 2017.
  3. Dr. D. Sheeja served as the Chairperson for National seminar on Recent Studies in Dravidian Comparative Grammer organized by the Department of Tamil, Kerala University on 2nd March 2018.
  4. Dr. K. Mabel Jain, Dr. Y. Pappa and Dr. A. Jaya Esklin attended an Orientation programme at Bharathidasan University, Tiruchirapalli from 15.11.2017 to 12.12.2017.
  5. Dr. D. Sheeja was awarded Aagathiar Gnana Sudar Viruthu by Aagathia Mamunivan Kalai Illakia Punpadtu Aaivu Maiyam.
  6. Dr. A. Jaya Esklin and Dr.J. Sangeetha attended NSS Orientation programme at Avinashilingam University, Coimbatore from 1.2.2018 to 7.2.2018.
  7. The Valedictory meeting of the Tamil Association was conducted on 21.3.2018. Dr. Raja Sree, Assistant Professor, Scott Christian College, Nagercoil was the guest speaker.

Activities of the academic year 2016-2017

  1. An Association meeting was held on 20.09.2016, Dr. S. Joseph Robin, Associate Professor, Scott Christian College was the guest speaker. He enlightened the students on the Topic Illakiamum Samuthayamum.
  2. Dr. R. Kala Gnana Selvam attended two days orientation workshop on Local Capacities for Peace/Do No Harm organized at Women's Christian College facilitated by Trainer of LCP South Asia Network on 11th and 12th August 2016.
  3. Dr. R. Kala Gnana Selvam attended a refresher course in Tamil at HRDC Pondicherry from 08.11.2016 to 28.11.2016.
  4. Dr. R. Kala Gnana Selvam got an award from Puducherry Tamil Sangam as Tamil Chemmal on 26.11.2016.
  5. Dr. D. Sheeja served as the Chairperson on 3rd International seminar of SVASH 2016 conducted by Swami Vivekananda Association of science and humanities on 13th August 2016.
  6. Dr. K. Mabel Jain and Dr. D. Sheeja attended a training programme on 21.09.2016 conducted by Consumer Protection Dept New Delhi along with concert from Chennai at Women's Christian College, Nagercoil.
  7. Dr. Ida Selva Rani and Dr. D. Sheeja were awarded Aagathiar Viruthu by Aagathia Mamunivan Kalai Illakia Punpadtu Aaivu Maiyam.
  8. Dr. D. Sheeja got an award from Tamil Nadu Kalai Illakkia Kalagam & Kavigan Chemmal Viruthu
  9. M. Alista and J. Golda Jancy of III Tamil participated in the one-day young writers workshop on creative writing (YWCW) at Women's Christian College, Nagercoil on 03.12.2016 conducted by Chuvadukal Iraiyiyal Ithal and the chair on Christian Studies Manonmaniam Sundaranar University.
  10. An Association Meeting was held on 03.03.2017. Dr. Nagaleshmi, Assistant Professor, S.T. Hindu College was the guest speaker. She enlightened the students on the Topic Illakia Charu.
  11. The department of Tamil organised a National seminar on Tharkala Illakiamum Penniamum on 17.03.2017.
