Economics Department

History of the Department

The department of Economics was started in the year 1986. It has five fully qualified faculty. Excellent coaching is given to the students. Students secure university ranks and are placed in high positions. Spoken Economics, Add on courses, certificate courses and computer education are given to students to enrich their knowledge. Poor students are helped by the department.

To send into the world spiritually inspired, intellectually, morally, economically well trained young women to develop the economy.

Mission

To enrich the students with knowledge and understanding of economics, capable of addressing the economic problems of our country.

Objectives

  1. To produce young economists.
  2. To enhance the students skills to face the competitive world.
  3. To empower the young women to meet the challenges of life confidently.
  4. To motivate the students both in curricular and extra curricular activities.

Highlights

The department offers courses on Economic statistics, Mathematical Methods and Banking which help the students for their higher studies and opt for better job facilities. Students can also pursue MBA, CA, ICWA, IAS, and also Competitive Examinations after they finish U.G Course.The department offers additional course called CAT Course Certificate in Accounting Technicians which will provide the employment opportunity.

Assistant Professor Economics Department Dr.D. Ajith Sims
M.A.,B.Ed., M.Phil, PhD.		 She is working as an Assistant Professor in the department of Economics in W.C.C Nagercoil since 2019. Previously she worked in Scott Christian College Nagercoil as an Assistant Professor for 6 years. She has published one paper in international publication and 4 papers in National level Seminars /Conferences.

Economic Association meeting

Economic Association meeting was conducted jointly with Youth women's Christian Association on 22. 07. 2023. Quiz competition was conducted by the YWCA and prizes were given to the students. Motivational talk was given by the secretary of YWCA.

Motivational talk on 03.08.2023 was conducted by the IAS Academy. Even TNPSE coaching was also done by them. Students were motivated and many of the students registered their names.

Fresher's Day was celebrated on 09.09.2023. Senior welcomed the fresher's with a rose. Various games were conducted for the fresher's by the seniors . Gifts were given to the first years. They asked introduce about themselves and they given refreshments. The fresher's day came to end with entertainments.

Dr. Ajith Sims participated in Refresher course from 15.11.2023 to 28.11.2023 conducted by UGC, HRDC Madurai Kamaraj University and Mrs. O.C. Geetha participated in Refresher Course conducted by Kerala University from 06.10.2023 to 19.10.2023.

Dr. Ajith Sims got best paper award in Paper Presentation conducted by Scott Christian College, Nagercoil on 11.07.2023.

Alumnae meeting was conducted on 26.03 2024. Few students attended the meeting. Mrs. O.C. Geetha welcomed the gathering. The alumni shared their experience. They said that they miss this college.

Activities of the academic year 2022-2023

Inauguration Meeting of the Association

The inaugural meeting of the Economics association was held on 28-10-2022 in the seminar hall II. The meeting started at 2o'clock with the prayer song by Jenisha and group of I B A. Economics. Mrs. O.C. Geetha, HoD of our department introduced the Guest speaker. Dr. Binduja, Associate Professor , Department of Economics, Devi Kumari college, Kuzhithurai, was the guest of the day. She is a good motivational speaker. She gave a motivational talk on " Women empowerment " It was very interesting and useful to the students. Ms. Menaka of III B. A. was elected as the Vice President of the Association, Ms. Adithi of II B.A as Secretary, Ms. Sharmi of III B.A. was Vice Secretary and Ms. Rishibha of II B.A. as treasurer of the association. The office bearers of the Association were honoured with the sash by our Guest. The meeting came to an end with vote of thanks by Ms. Rishibha.

Refresher Course

Mrs. O.C. Geetha HOD attended 2 weeks online refresher course conducted by Madurai Kamaraj University, Madurai from. 01.09.2022 to 14.09.2022.

Holy Cross college, conducted Crossonomics a Quiz competition on 31.01.2023. Our students Adithi and Vinisha of II B.A Economics won II Prize

NMCC, Marthandam, conducted Quiz competition on 22.09.2023. Our students Vinisha of II B.A and Sasmitha of III B.A. Economics won II Prize and Adithi of II B.A and Subhasree of III B.A won III prize.

Poster competition

Departmental poster competition was held on 03.02.2023. Adithi and Group won the I Prize Deepika and group won the II prize.

Essay writing competition

Essay writing competition was conducted in our department on 03.03.2023 on the topic "Know your Economist". Santhiya Jasmine of I B..A got I Prize. Ms. Adithi of II B.A got II prize and Ms. Deepika of I B.A got III Prize.

Dr. Saravana Amutha Kumari attended a FDP Programme conducted by the government of Tamil Nadu for 5 days from 30.01.2023 to 03.02.2023.

Inauguration Meeting of the Association

The inaugural meeting of the Economics association was held on 15-12-2021 in the seminar hall II. The meeting started at 2o'clock with the prayer song by Shalini and group of III. B A. Economics. Mrs. O.C. Geetha, HoD of our department introduced the Guest speaker. Dr. Hylin Reba, Assistant Professor, Department of Economics, Scoot Christian College, Nagercoil, was the guest of the day. She is a gold medalist in B.A and M.A., and M.Phil. She is an alumna of our College. She gave a motivational talk. It was very interesting and useful to the students. Ms. Booja of III B. A. was elected as the Vice President of the Association, Ms. Sreedharshini of III B.A as Secretary, Ms. Sasmida of II B.A. was Vice Secretary o and Ms. Gopika Raj of II B.A. as treasurer of the association. The office bearers of the Association were honoured with the sash by our Guest. The meeting came to an end with vote of thanks by Ms. Booja.

Freshers Day

Freshers Day was organised by the II and III years on 16.12.2021. First years introduced them. Games were organised. Freshers enjoyed.

Joy of Giving

Joy of giving was celebrated on 26.03.2022. We went to NIRAS, Home, Asaripallam. There are 16 girls in the Home. 20 students and 4 staff went to the home. Students gave sweets, snacks fruits and toilets items. We spent time with them and drank juice with them.

Alumnae Meeting

Our department conducted alumnae meeting on 18.04.2022. Few of our students came and shared their experiences in the college. They had a nice time.

Educational Trip

Department of Economics arranged educational trip to Cochin on 18.05.2022. 52 students and 2 staff went to the trip. First went to Alapuzha beach then went to Wonderla. The students went to boating and finally went to Lulu Mall. We returned at 8am on 19.05.2022 to College campus.

Activities of the academic year 2020-2021

  1. Department of Economics conducted E-Quiz on the topic Macro Economics from 15.06.2020 to 19.06.2020. It was organized by Mrs.O.C. Geetha, HOD, department of Economics.
  2. Dr. N. Jayanthi organized an E- Quiz on the topic Indian Economy from 24.07.2020 to 27.07.2020.
  3. Our department conducted a essay writing competition on 20.12.2020 on the topic "Impact of Covid-19 in Indian Economy".
  4. General Knowledge test was conducted on Economics on 20.01.2021.
  5. The Alumnae Annual get together of our department was held on 22.03.2021 at 2:30 pm.

Activities of the academic year 2019-2020

  1. The inaugural meeting of the Economics association was held on 20-08-2019. Dr. Baby, Asst Professor, Sri Devi Kumari College, Kuzhithurai was the guest of the day. She gave a motivational talk on "You can also win". It was very interesting and useful to the students. Ms. Jenisha of III B. A. was elected as the Vice President of the Association, Ms. Vigneshwari of III B.A as Secretary, Ms. Sreekutty Vice Secretary of II B.A. and Udaya Marish of II B.A. as treasurer of the association.
  2. Two students of our department Ms. Sreekutty from IIB.A. Economics and Ms. Mubaraka Jahangeer of II B.A. participated in quiz competition conducted by the Nesamony Memorial Christian College, Marthandam on 27.08.2019. They bagged the II place. Department of Economics and Tamil conducted a counseling programme. Fr. Sam, Correspondent St. John's College, Ammandivilai.
  3. The joy of giving was decided to be celebrated on 25.10 2019. Two staff and eight students went to George Muller Children's Home, Paraikankal, Nagercoil.
  4. Guest lecture on Femininity was conducted on 12.12.2019. The Guest speakers were Dr. J. Michael Xavier and Dr. Thenmozhi, Senior Medical officers, Manitham Homeo Healing Centre, Tiruchy. They gave a talk on Femininity in Economics. It was a motivation to the students.
  5. Alumni meeting was held on 28.02.2020 at 3.pm.

Activities of the academic year 2018-2019

  1. The inaugural meeting of the Economics association was held on 24-07-2018. Mr. N Festus Wilson, Station Superintendent, Southern Railway was the Chief Guest and gave a talk on different type of competitive examination. We elected Ms. Shelcia as secretary of Economics association.
  2. Our department conducted an interdepartmental poster competition on 11-09-2018. Five important topics were given to the students. The topics are Environmental Issue, Women Harasment, Kerala Flood, GST and Demonetization.
  3. A one day workshop on Entrepreneurship was held on 12-10-18. Mrs. Anoma Keisy demonstrated different types of juices in the morning session. Mrs. Nirmala demonstrated surf, lotion, sabeena powder etc, in the afternoon session.
  4. M.P. Abinaya, S. Bavithra, B. Shelcia, M. Sumaiya from IIIB.A.Economics participated in quiz competition conducted in the Nesamony Memorial Christian College, Marthandam on 18.10.2018.
  5. Dr. N. JAYANTHY, Asst. Prof. of Economics attended a two days faculty development programme conducted by ICT Academy on 27th August and 28th August at Women's Christian College, Nagercoil. She also attended the UGC sponsored orientation programme conducted by Madurai Kamaraj University, held from 16-11-2018 to 13-12-2018.
  6. The Alumnae Annual get together of our department was held on 06-02-2019 at 03:30 pm.
  7. The Economics department conducted an elocution competition on 07-02-2019. The topic for the competition is "Budget". Seven students of our department participated in the competition out of them three won prizes. Miss. J. Sahaya Anbarasi (III B. A. Economics ) got the 1st prize, Miss. K. S. Sree Kutty (I B. A. Economics) got the 2nd prize and Miss. B. Shelcia (III B. A. Economics ) got the 3rd prize.
  8. Our department conducted a National Seminar on "The Impact on Solid Waste Management". The resource person for the morning session was Dr. Sherly Assistant Professor & H. O. D. of Economics Department , Christian College, Kattakada, Trivandrum. She gave a talk on "The Impact on Solid Waste Management". In the afternoon session Dr. Salikumar, Assistant Professor & H. O. D. of Economics Department, S. T. Hindu college, Nagercoil gave a talk on "Public Health in India".
  9. Miss. M. P. Abinaya, III B. A. Economics participated and presented a paper on "Digital India and its Impact" and Miss. J. Sahaya Anbarasi , III B. A. Economics participated and presented a paper on "The Budget" in the National Seminar conducted by the Research Forum, Women's Christian College, Nagercoil on 18-02-2019.
  10. Miss. B. Shelcia , III B. A. Economics participated in the inter collegiate Ball Badminton match conducted by M. S. University from 10-09-2018 to 11-09-2018 and won 4th place. She participated in C. M. Trophy Ball Badminton match conducted in the Government Arts and Science College, Konam. She also participated in the inter departmental sports competition conducted by Women's Christian College, Nagercoil and got prizes.
  11. Know your Economy test was conducted by SRAEF (Scientific Research Association For Economics and Finance ) in Feb 2019. 35 students participated. Our student B.Shelcia of IIIB.A. Economics was awarded as College Toper and cash prize Rs.500 was given.

Activities of the academic year 2017-2018

  1. The activities of the Department of Economics started with the Inauguration of the Economics Association on 17.08.2017. Dr. J. Sacratees, HOD , Department of Economics, Manonmaniam Sundaranar Univesity, Tirunelveli, was the guest speaker. Miss.V. Sujitha of III B.A. Economics was elected as the Economics Association Secretary.
  2. An intercollegiate model competition was conducted by our department on 20.09.2017.
  3. Mrs. O.C. Geetha served as a resource person in Economics Association of Nesamony Memorial Christian College, Marthamdam on 20.09.2017.
  4. Two aspiring students of III Economics attended IAS training classes from 19.10.2017 to 21.10.2017 conducted by AIACHE at Chennai.
  5. An International Conference was conducted by the Department of Economics and Commerce on 05.01.2018 on the topic "Innovative and emerging strategies in Economics and Commerce". The resource persons were Er. Moshe .J. Aron, Senior IT Enterprise Architect, CIBC, Canada and Dr. S. Iyyampillai, Professor, Department of Economics Chair, School of Economics and Commerce &Financial Studies, Bharathidasan Universiy, Thiruchirapali. 20 papers were presented by the teachers and scholars of various institutions. It was published in the "Roots" International Journal of Multi- disciplinary Researchers.
  6. Dr. M. Janet vasantha Kumari attended a refresher course from 02.02.2018 to 27.02.2018 conducted by Kerela University, Kariyavattom.
  7. The department of Economics organised a workshop on "BIG IDEA" on 08.02.2018. The Resource persons were Mr. Durai Jaikar, Assistant professor, CARE School of Management , Trichy and Mr. Stracey George, Assistant Professor ,CARE School of Management , Trichy. They gave a talk on "How to develop new business ideas and seek a career as entrepreneurs". They conducted a practical section also to develop a new business idea.
  8. Nine of our smart students along with our staff Dr. N. Saravana Amutha Kumari attended a National seminar on 19.03.2018 conducted by Holy Cross College, Nagercoil.
  9. Ms. R. Haritha of III Economics won Third prize in Elocution conducted by Consumer Club on 02.03.2018.
  10. The department Alumnae Meeting was held on 12.03.2018 at 4 p.m.
  11. The Valedictory function of the Economics Association was held on 24-4-2018, Dr.Moni, Associate professor, Nesamomy Memorial Christian College was the Chief Guest. He gave a motivational talk about achievement of great leaders.

Activities of the academic year 2016-2017

  1. The inaugural meeting of the Economics Association was held on 09.08.2016 in the Assembly Hall at 1.00pm. The chief guest Mr.S.Kumararajan, Chairman of CAT course Delhi gave a talk on career Growth and Motivation. Ms.S. Jasmine was elected as the Secretary of Economics Association.
  2. Our department had arranged an Association meeting on 04.10.2016. Dr. T. Ramachandran , Principal in-charge of Govt Arts College, Nagercoil was the chief guest. He inspired the students by his useful and informative talk on the job opportunities for Economics students.
  3. Our student R. Haritha of II Economics won Second prize in the State level Quiz competition organized by Adigalar Quiz Club, IQAC and Alumni Association of Thiruvalluvar College, Papanasam held on 19. 08.2016.
  4. The valedictory meeting of our Association was held on 04.04.2017 at 2 pm, where Dr. Jeni Sanjana, assistant Professor of Economics, Holy Cross College, Nagercoil was the Chief Guest, delivered a lecture on 'Job Orientation'.
